YouTube about tags

XXLRay

I Love YTtalk
There was a German hangout from YouTube Creator academy in which one of the officials told details about the tag algorithm (10:39 video ID 3ZjiIDbYRZs). According to him a large amount of tags may lead to single tags being interpreted as less important where too few tags may result in missed searches.

The recommendation was to use about 20 tags with ten of them being very specific.

Just wanted to let you know this :)

I gotta admit that tags are still giving me a big headache every time I upload a new video. I've read and watched a lot of guides and while some of them claim that You should use single words that are relevant to the video, others say that compound tags (whole search phrases, like "rocket league first matches") are better. While I think I'm doing a good job with Title and description in my videos I am really confused what works best for tags and it's driving me crazy.

Well YouTube says a mixture works best. Just note that "toilet", "repair", "fail" as tags may give you less hits than "toilet repair fail". This is because you will rank low for wide keywords like "repair" if your video is new but high when there is only little competition for your specific keyword. Note that a specific tag will likely still rank you for the single words somehow.

awesome info thanks

Thanks for sharing! I watched the whole video. Always nice to get some facts from an actual YT employee. :bookworm2:

I thought it was interesting that he recommended to use about 10 tags that relate to the video and another 10 that relate to the channel as a whole.

Thank you both!!

It's a pity that that video doesn't have english subtitles. My German is way too weak to understand it. "Ich heisse Damian und Ich wohne in Warschau"... that's all German that I remember from school haha.

I'm not usually glad to be German so this was a rare exception ;)

The only other tag related thing I remember him saying was that you shouldn't use tags that are too specific. He gave a quick example, saying that no one's gonna search for "sunrise in cologne" so it's better to split it into "sunrise" and "cologne".
