Would this kind of setup work?

I have a Blue Yeti and I want to get a mic stand so I can sing. Could I set it up like the guy with it sticking straight out of a boom stand and just angle it up and sideways or do I need a shock mount?

Personally I would move the mic stand up to a standing level and use it, because most people can't really project their voice well sitting down :)

So the microphone would still work it it was pointing up diagonally so it would be at standing level?

It doesn't matter. Sound is not spatial orientation specific. You just need to have the mic in front of your mouth on cardioid with the front facing you. It could be upside down if you felt like it.

I agree with Rouge though. You get only half the range of your diaphragm when sitting. Stand yer a**e up and belt out the lines.
