Would this be illegal?

Gotta agree that if this is in the greay area for you copyright wise, dont do it. Maybe you could come up with something better that you would be more proud of? :)

I think its slightly different with GoPro. They run tons of competitions etc and like their logo at the beginning and end of videos to show viewers the footage was filmed with a GoPro camera etc. Im a pretty active member on some GoPro forums and many of those members actively upload using the GoPro logo at the beginning or end (as long as its not for the wrong purposes!) and have been fine - some of them have close contacts with GoPro themselves.

I guess the only way to get a definitive answer is to contact GoPro support.
I'll stick the question up on the GoPro forums as well to see what they come back with...... ;)

Well yes of course if they're okay with it great, I did say to him: obtain permission or find something else. :D
