Just got paid by Machinima and planning to purchase new camera and external mic..
Will this mic work with Canon T5i?

Mic:
Zoom ZH1 Handy Portable Digital Recorder

I want to connect it to my camera so that I dont have to sync up the sound afterwords.

No it will not hook directly up to the Canon. Or to any camera for that matter.

However it is a great quality mic, relatively cheap and quite durable for the price.
What you can do is record on separate tracks and then sync them up later in post.

If you don't want to do this you will need to look for an on camera mic, might I suggest a cheap audio technica shotgun mic,
or even a wired lav mic depending on what type of videos your shooting.

However it won't compare to syncing up later with an external recorder.

It will work, but it's not exactly ideal. Connect the line/headphone out jack to the mic jack of your T5i with a male to male 3.5mm audio cable. You'll have to play with both the mic input level and the volume level on the H1 as well as your mic input settings on your T5i to get the right balance for the best quality sound.

Have you tried this with that microphone? I tried that with my Sony-A77 and the H1 Handy Recorder and it worked but it didn't sound nearly as good as the mic did without hooking it up. I played with the levels for a couple hours and never got it sounding good enough to stick with.

I just assumed it was the microphone not my camera.

I've tried it hooked up to a Canon T2i. Getting the right balance is a major pain in the a** because there's no straight line out-it's dependent on the volume level and anything over about 60% volume level made the audio start clipping with my setup. On that shoot, the only reason we were using the line out was to aid in the syncing process, so the audio quality feeding into the camera didn't matter that much since we were recording. Recording off the H1 as a separate track will always yield better results since it bypasses the camera's noisy preamps.

Do you have any suggestion for mic to use with T5i?

In terms of mics with a 3.5mm audio jack, the only two I've used are the Rode Videomic and the Shure VP83. I recommend the Rode Videomic (the new version with the Rycote mount) unless you need something more compact. I like the design of the Shure, but I don't recommend it unless you're using an external recorder because the built in low cut filter is way too aggressive in trimming out the low end.

A lav mic may suit you better depending on your setup, but I don't have any experience with them. Someone else would be better suited to recommend one for you if you want to go that route.
