Why is 100 subs so hard to get?

I haven't been on youtube for a very long period of time but i do notice getting subs seems harder then you would think when you start. i thought i had an original idea i still think i do but i just need to work on being more comfortable on mic/camera so i can put more in my content. i've reached like 8/9 subscribers in about 1/2 weeks.

Agree. Basically growth accelarates so it's gonna be hard when you're channels small. When you get more popular, that is a signifier to people of quality, which aids your growth more. And of course, the larger you are, the more Youtube promotes you. I remember thinking of Pewdiepie as "the guy with 15 million subs", that was in November. Now he's nearly doubled that in 9 months.

Channels of a certain size get promoted 24/7 by YouTube; it's their own numbers game - all they care about are the well-subbed, highly-viewed channels, regardless of actual content (or quality). Viewers are attracted to big, shiny numbers, as a means of fitting in to the consensus of opinion (in real life or online).

You don't honestly think PewDiePie promoted himself to a ridiculous number of subs? I get constant promo mails and daily recommendations flooding through YouTube to watch another huge channel's new video (usually the next waste-of-time PewDiePie's s**t).

To think they did it all by themselves is nonsense.

its a shame that youtube is all about subs and that youtube promote big youtubers like pew die pie all he does is just scream at the camera and make noises ? But it worked for him which makes you think if you should lower your self to his and other big youtubers who aren't that funny or good standards!.. But keep posting vids and the views and subs will come in :)
stay strong keep on editing

Getting 100 subs is really difficult because You Tube fame, like fame in almost every place works on the basis of the snowball effect. What this means is that it is VERY hard to get started, but once you get a little bit big (say 100-1000 subs) you channel starts growing Faster, and FASTER, and gets Bigger, and BIGGER. Thats why the big channels that have like 500k subs will get over 100 subs new subs a day with little to no effort, hell there are channels out there that make 1 video every 3 weeks and they are still growing shockingly fast.

100 subs a day? Talk about more like 1-3k subs a day at 500k sub total. Pretty crazy how the snowball effect works. But I do agree, once you get bigger it gets much faster. so the smaller you are, the harder it is to promote yourself.

I agree that its the getting the ball rolling part that is the hardest but I also think it gets rid of the people who are in it for the wrong reasons and the rest of us continue on, as long as you still enjoy making the content then you will get there :)

i think people view channels with less than 100 videos as illegitimate. but the good thing is while no one is paying attention you have time to polish what youre doing and then youll stumble on something good that gets you subs!

The first 100 is meant to be hard! It weeds out the flyby wannabes that think they'll be the next big thing after they upload their first video.

Get past that first 100, it makes you understand that it takes hard work and dedication to grow your channel, then reap the rewards!

As @MagetheEntertainer mentioned, your channel will be a snowball. It starts as a single snowflake. Just keep working on it and it will gain tremendous momentum!

exactly!

You have more subscribers than me! i am jealous Haha :D

I have started my Youtube channel couple months ago and i enjoy making videos and i only have 12 subscribers and it did take me a long time(2/3 months) to get my 12th subscriber recently in the last few days.

The reason is that not i'm not getting some more subscribers because i haven't been promoting my channel in the last 2 months because i still am improving my videos and I am going to start promoting my videos on Younow and on Facebook,Twitter again and on here and i am going stay consistent uploading videos every week and making friends and collab with other Youtubers to get more subscribers.

I am going get a better camera to record my videos pretty soon!

My aim is to get 500 subscribers on Youtube by 2015! :)

My advice is try to be consistent with your videos and put good content into them, reply to your comments and make friends with Youtubers and collab with them, and try to keep at it and most important thing is to enjoy making videos and with in time you will get there at the end. :)

Nothing to add except that I agree- I find it really hard to gain subscribers. I've been stuck at 29 subs for over a month now and I've been around since September of last year. Some of my newer videos have yet to reach 10 views after being up for over a month. It's one of those things- if it were easy to get popular on YouTube everyone would do it.

I think this forum makes it feel like everyone has some kind of success on YouTube. The truth is I think those who are successful are the most vocal here. Probably for every channel that makes it to 100 subs you probably have dozens that are below 100 or never made it to 100 and quit.
