The way that any recommendation/related engine works is by a number of factors. Sure, keywords and tags help, as does a record of having a lot of the same type of content in one place (that's why consistency is really good for your channel...if you have 10 cooking videos, that puts your channel more into the "cooking" algorithm than if you had 1 cooking video, and a puppies video and a game). The number of clicks a video gets will up its score into how well it relates to the video that's playing, as well as any comments on the video. So if 1500 people all say "Beyonce" on your video, you're probably going to wind up somehow affecting the algorithm that determines how your videos/channels are recommended or related.
There isn't someone behind-the-scenes deciding who gets featured and who doesn't. It's all run through systems that are constantly tweaked to satisfy the users. The best way of getting your channel/content featured is to be consistent, to label it well, to promote it/embed it/share it across multiple platforms, and to grow a fan base who will talk about it.
