Why does everything seem more important than it is?

Symph

I'm a dude with a face and I know how to use it.
When I'm done making a video and I edit it, everything seems important. I have trouble cutting things out because something in me thinks it's all necessary to the vlog. Somehow before the video is released I have this kind of... blinder on my vision that can't view it unbiasedly. Then after the video is up and old news and I've moved on to new projects I watch it back and think "There is so much unnecessary crap in here, I probably could have shaved off a whole minute of this vlog"

Do any of you have this issue?

Try editing it, leave it for a day and come back and re-edit to cut down further. Same thing happens to me if I'm editing photos or something! Or any document come to think of it, guess your brain subconsciously mulls things over while you're away and decided "Actually, that doesn't really need to be there". That's my rationale anyway! :D

That's not a bad idea, I do that with my music and it's how I realize when things are off or the mix isn't strong enough, for some reason I never thought to apply the same principle to videos.

I guess it's because editing always takes a reasonable amount of time as it is and that would be adding another step to it! Also there's a constant pressure to release videos/ stick to a schedule, etc. and it's difficult to do this when you are trying to keep up with such a schedule!

It's rare that I watch a video a few days after I've released it, and don't see a dozen ways to make it better. Like the other poster said, wait a few days, or wait until you have a different mindset to go back and edit it. Couldn't hurt, and I do believe maximizing videos to keep even the most ADHD of people (like myself) engaged really does help with audience retention. That in return helps you rank higher in suggested videos and YT search rankings.

That sounds like a good idea. But, I get that thing where I get so excited when I make something new that I have to share it right away so it's hard to leave things for a few days lol

When I finish editing my videos I look over it a few times in the viewer to make sure its all good probably most of you do this but before I record I always know what im gonna say and have it all thought out in my head so when it does come to editing I have very little to cut down because I thought of it in my head and planned it out theres less "crap" in it I guess. I only usually cut out the um's and the longish pauses but yeah.

Plan it all out what your gonna say and how your gonna say it, makes everything a lot easier and your always certain what to put in

I have the same problem. I tend to leave a lot of crap in. That's why for my vlog I make sure I don't go over 1 minute long. And for my main stuff I don't upload once I'm done. I let it still for a bit and then go back and see what I can cut out. One good way to know when to cut something out is when you are watching your video and you see yourself skipping ahead, then maybe the scenes you skipped can be cut out.

Or you can wear a blindfold and just randomly smash your keyboard until you get tired, j/k.

This is a channel where I record myself creating my new album in a studio. There is no planning it out with that type of thing I just have cameras going while I'm in the middle of the creation process. I think that's what makes me think things are important, the adrenaline rush from getting the songs sounding good and the fact that I'm capturing real life stuff makes me feel like the whole thing is more epic than it actually is, once that adrenaline passes I can watch it back and be like "Ok you spent aloooot of time at the 1:30 minute point where nothing interesting is happening...." lol[DOUBLEPOST=1400302185][/DOUBLEPOST]

Yeah I get what you're saying, when it comes to actual vlogs I don't have as much of a problem with this. It's when I'm making my SUPER EPIC MUSIC that I start thinking things that aren't very important really are.
