If something is overly vulgar or I know they stole another youtubers content then i dislike. Other than that i just leave. I think low retention is a better way to penalize those who make that type of content. Likes and dislikes really don't impact the algorithm that much. So they can still get views. Especially since many people who dislike a video will watch it to the end or more than once. You are actually helping them by doing that.

I only dislike a video if it is clearly sending the wrong message such as animal abuse, racism, other discrimination...

I usually skip or close the video if I don't like it.

The only time I dislike is when the title/thumbnail is misleading. Mainly the click-baits.

If I don't like a video, I usually click away. The only time I consider disliking a video is when it is spreading an offensive message, but then I look at Friday by Rebecca Black and realise that disliking it's probably a bad idea.

I only dislike a video if I find it highly offensive or/when they making fun of other people and being popular because of it!

It wasn't that long ago that YouTube rating system was a 5 star model. And clicking 1 or 2 stars wasn't deemed a dislike. What they discovered was that most folks gave 1 or 5 star ratings. So they eliminated the middle ground and the like/dislike was born.

In my mind I still think of if as a rating. So I don't mind getting dislikes. I get a lot of dislikes. I think it's a good gauge of what does or doesn't work for folks. Heck my friends and I don't even like the same restaurants, disliking something for whatever reason isn't a bad thing. I'd rather that than someone leave a nasty comment or "there's 7 minutes of my life I'll never get back."

The only video I have ever disliked was the recent COD trailer because it looks like s**t

That was like an hour after it was released though and there were more likes than dislikes... Now it's the 2nd most disliked video ever lmao

I wonder if the responses here reflect the general YT viewers or not. Maybe we are kinder since we can put ourselves in the creator's shoes.

Or not?

I honestly think disliking a video because you find content vulgar very petulant. If you disagree ethically with certain content or the creator has stole content, I can see why you'd hit the dislike. But leaving a comment is far more effective. I think it's more a case of Schadenfreude when most people to hit the dislike button
