Why do people hide their subs? I’m curious.

As someone with a low sub count the main reason I do it is pretty much in line with what a lot of people in this thread have said. Basically I dont want someone to click on my videos see that my subcount is only in the 20's and think "Eesh...he must suck" My videos do pretty alright for views but I've found that my channel operates more as a reference channel than something people sub to and keep coming back to. They tend to look up the movie they were looking for and then move on. I've always said to myself that when my subs get into the hundreds then I might reveal the subcounter. but till then Im more than happy to keep it hidden and let people judge me by my content rather than my popularity :)
 
I’m honestly more likely to stay on a channel if their sub count is showing. When you hide it, It makes me feel like you think too much of yourself and you think you are too good for a low sub count or something. Everyone starts somewhere. I feel like it’s kinda like lying on your resume. Maybe I’m over reacting but I just don’t like it. I have no clue why I feel so strongly about this lol it’s a little silly, I know- but still.

I only feel strongly about silly things.
 
We only notice that because we make videos and run channels. To a casual viewer they won’t even notice it. I personally think it’s because if you’re on YouTube for years and have like 55 subscribers it’s kinda embarrassing

i am by no means embarrassed by the fact that I only have 55 subscribers. I don’t see what is so embarrassing about that, I only have 15 videos up and haven’t been on my channel for a year now for my own personal reasons. Of course I’m not going to have a whole bunch of subscribers. Not that I have to explain myself. I have no clue why you are coming for me, I’ve been nothing but nice to you the times that I have bumped into you on these forums.

This; xD while having 20ish subs in 12 months isnt too terrible in my opinion if Im still at this level (Or not progressively higher) this time next year I'd feel kind of awkward...

oh you have 55? The exact number I said? I swear it’s a coincidence and not intentional! Please forgive me! But many threads I’ve read on here have had people posting often saying they will hide their numbers until they feel it’s good enough to display. Actually since most people start at zero it must not have bothered the original few who got everyone started
 
People seem to think if you have a high amount of subs more people will subscribe so if you hide people won't know and it leaves them to watch your content to decide whether they want to subscribe or not. This is becoming more and more common which is quite sad really. YouTube is supposed to be fun and I think a lot of new channels are forgetting this.
 
I did this before, my reason were I didn't want to pressure myself because I kept looking on how much subs I got daily and I kind of feel embarrassed that I had low subs but I removed it, I don't see the reason to hide it anymore. No difference at all when I hide and unhide it, subs are still the same even when I hid my sub count. I felt better now and accepted the fact that viewers are choosy, if they really want yo subscribe to you then they'll subscribe to you even if you hide it or not.
