Why do people hide their subs? I’m curious.

is it because they want to seem like they are more popular? Are they not doing it for the subs? If that were the case why would it matter? Im just curious because it just comes off a little sketchy to me for some reason.

I suppose it's to hide the "first impression" that comes from the subscriber count. On average when you see a channel with a low subscriber count you are less motivated to subscribe or even have a look at their content, hiding it blocks this first impression to people that see it as a determinant aspect.

Can be many reasons.

I've seen channels that hide subs because they just want to make content not let people know their sub counts.

Another big reason is if they are a brand or something they can show off views vs sub counts.

I don't know... I'm the type of person that when I see sub counts hidden I get that "this is kind of sketchy" vibe and click away lolol I'd rather see a low sub count than no subs. Basically "What do you have to hide?" mentality, you know? I've seen people talk about this in the past and I know I'm not alone in this feeling.

so it's true that people are leads motivated to subscribe if they see you have a low subscriber count??? No wonder why I've been stuck where I am for a while LOL

It all seems to fall down to impressions. There is a psychological bias - can't remember the name of it currently - that causes people to be more curious about a high subscriber count. Hiding a sub count is to nullify this bias.
Also, YouTubers with a low sub count automatically have a negative stigma attached to them. There is a reliability bias and quality of content concern with low sub channels (as well as a consistancy of quality upload bias).
If i can find the research paper i studied for one of my uni assignments i will post a copy up for anyone interested but it is a psychological bias issue. The sub count hider was an attempt to eliminate that bias.

Very good question, perhaps they are happy to with subscriber number or it could be they think that having a low number would on display would put off new people subscribing. However, I think having the number hidden does the opposite of the intended effect and could put off people from subbing to that person. Idk, be proud of what number you, because there is always someone with a lower number than you.

Interesting topic...I just supposed it was so people didn’t judge someone for having a low sub count as that often can happen (I’ve heard people say that before). However, a lot of other reasons mentioned here also make sense

It probably is hidden to avoid showing a low sub count, but if a channel is new (6 months or less), having a low sub count is understandable.

I would think people subbed because they liked the content as opposed to subbing be because of "following the crowd".

I dont think i have ever not subbed just because someone's sub numbers were low.
Some massive channels i dont even bother subbing to because their videos come up on my front page anyways

Because they think that it will get people to watch their content. Low subscriber numbers keep the grand majority of people from watching your content. Once you hit 100K people will watch utter crap and support you because you are a big YouTuber, it is the Sheep effect. Or lemming effect, take your pick. That 100K subscriber mark is the key to making a living off YouTube.

I never hid mine. I have nothing to hide and was comfortable at 1 subscriber and comfortable at the 5,000 I have now.
