Why am I Yellow and Dull???

Jessica

Just a girl with a camera
I know that there have been posts previously about lights and such but this isn't entirely about lights. I am in need of some help. My past two videos were filmed in a bathroom with vanity lights and the lighting was perfect. My most recent video was filmed in my living room with 60 watt bulbs. I am wondering why the video comes out dull and yellowish. Is there anything I can do? I have a 1080p camera. Do I just need better lights and backdrop... If so what are the best lights I can get.

Maybe I should start filming in my bathroom. It seems like so many people do it these days, it's not really a weird thing. I'd rather be yellow in my videos than ghostly white. Like, golly. It really makes me look terrible, and puts too much highlight on my hair.

(OMG My last video was actually filmed in my bathroom. O_O I forgot about that one)

Two words- White Balance. Your camera does not do a great job at determining the "color" of light which is hitting it's imager. It can only guess. Professional videos are never shot with "auto white balance". If you camera has the ability set a custom white balance that matches the light in which you are shooting.

Well I use a Samsung stylus... Any suggestions

White balance has a lot to do with it. Also, the color of the lightbulb itself, and the casing around the lightbulb, can change the color of the lighting. Most lighting in living rooms/etc are yellow lights, or have a yellowish lamp shade, glass, etc.

In your video editor, or even on your camera, you should be able to change the white balance.

If that doesn't help, change your lighting. The whiter the light, the better your videos will become. Professional lighting (Not normal lamps, etc.) are best.

Take this picture for example. Left is white light, right is yellow light (Or normal lights found in houses)

I don't personally use any professional equipment, as I just use a lamp that I have in my living room. I then edit the white balance in my video editor. I need to get some better equipment though. I don't know much about wattages either.

I know soft boxes are good. Having at least 2 (One on each side) will create an even bright lighting.

Also lighting that projects light directly, not behind a shade will work very well also. The lamp I use has a small version of this that I am able to move around.

You can also try CFL's for your lamp in the livingroom. Those are the spiral lightbulbs (Compact Florescent Lights)
