WTF youtube? Only 30 % have adblock....

Advertisers don't see sales coming from people watching YouTube videos. YouTube Red could potentially cause CPMs to drop even further.

People heard you can make money from YouTube and flocked to it making and monetizing their videos.

When there were only a few channels to show ads, advertisers had to bid more to get their ads shown. Now that practically every video seems to be monetized, advertisers don't need to bid as high to get their as shown.

Actually that would drive competition if you think about it, the bid on the ad auction would have to be higher to get ad placement so CPM should rise, I think in general the downward trend is mainly due to Adblock users and the lack of interest by advertisers. Only during high profile events such as the Super Bowl or the olympics the interest seems high, 4th quarter should generally be good because of the holiday season however novembers earnings tanked due to free trials of Red. Next month were going to see what red is really all about, hopefully it's going to be good. Those who drop the trial will go back to basic Adsense earning views unless they use Adblock and we should start seeing some gains again, or so I hope.

That was the case, but now that there are hundreds of thousands of channels with millions of videos to play ads on, getting ad placement isn't difficult.

As more and more channels become available, they can bid less and less and still have their ads aired.

Last year, November was an amazing month for revenue. This year, not so great at all..... Even if December is amazing (which I doubt), it still won't make up for a very disappointing 2015.

So sad but so true. Spot on. I only hope 2016 will be a better year, hopefully. It's such an ugly to do so well and have the carpet pulled from under your feet.

The same here and the "good wave" continued till the end of January 2015!

From 18th this month I see some significant improvement but nothing like 2014.[DOUBLEPOST=1448342009,1448341501][/DOUBLEPOST]To avoid the CPM "dilution" problem YouTube have created the top slots trick- more or less randomly picked up channels from the top 1% for certain niche artificially made viral (tenth of millions of views per month).
The chosen YouTube creators are happy as they can concentrate 100% on their YouTube activities and YouTube is happy as it always can replace them with another channel from the top 1% (if necessary). :)

There are a lot of factors to consider, but here's a few.

Advertisers prefer to advertise with the top tier of channels and do different forms of advertising with these creators.

There are more mobile users than ever, and this figure keeps increasing. Mobile advertising is not as popular as desktop advertising and has lower click through rates.

More and more people use blocking extensions for their desktops, you don't make money if the ad is blocked.

On top of this, there are more and more people opting into monetization after the partnership program was opened up to almost everyone. There's a lot of videos to display ads on.

Thankfully though, the number of YouTube users gets bigger every year, so this kind of balances everything out.
