When should I start looking into a network?

Damn that's too bad. I guess the more YouTube grows that's just what it's gonna come down to.
It doesn't have to be like that. People tend to take the good ones for granted, and when the fall, only two types remain, the super large, and the mediocre. And sometimes, it's hard to tell one from the other.

We died off due to lack of support when we needed it.

YouTube networks can help with your channel even though they do take a revenue share but some networks offer 80/10 to 90/10 revenue share and since most networks will help you grow, so you will most likely earn more than if you were not in a network. :)

Unless you're a large channel with millions of monthly views, I don't know of any network that would actually help a channel grow.

They'll offer various tools and plug-ins which could help, but, as for actually helping a channel? That almost always entirely up to the channel to do on their own.

It should also be said that, more often than not, the same or similar tools could be found either for free or for a nominal fee without joining a network or signing over a percentage of your income.
