When is the best time to start a 2nd channel?

Patrick Harris

You see what I did there?
I'm not seriously considering another channel just yet, but in the near future I would LOVE to have a "behind the scenes" or "blooper" kind of channel. Maybe have some vlogs or "making of" videos there. But at what point do you create a second channel? Right now I am content with the success my channel is enjoying in such a short time, but I still want so much more for it. I feel like trying to start another channel will distract me from my main channel.

Thoughts?

I personally cannot stand those who make multiple channels. To me, it shows greed. Your fanbase is on your main one so you should cater to only one network. That's just my personal opinion. I would never consider doing such a thing.

KV, I'm gonna have to politely disagree with you. Yes, you should focus on your main fanbase, but say you are a skit channel. Sometimes with skits, you don't get to see the real person behind the camera or on screen, or you want to post some behind the scenes things. If you put those in the main channel, it kind of ruins the flow of your channel. A second channel in my opinion is a great way to organize multiple types of videos. Skits go in one, behind-the-scenes or vlogs in another, for people who want those things.

as for the original question, I'd say when you get a pretty following, start a second channel. But the second channel shouldn't be your primary focus. Like, if you do weekly content on your main, you can post on your second every other week. Or if it's behind the scenes things, you can post them a few days after the main video. But don't treat the second as a priority, otherwise it wouldn't be "a second" channel

I agree with FlipRJ. Having a second channel can be useful. One for shot films, one for vlogs. You're not ignoring your fan base, you have 2 different fan bases.

Once my channel makes partner, then I'll worry about a second channel. As for right now, I think I need to focus on the channel that I have and get it established first

I'd like to think about it this way. You are building your channel--constantly. The point of having a main channel is for people to be able to get to know you, to have one sure fire link to gain access to you and the work that you do. Following what has been previously said, the conflict comes when you want to upload content that is not directly related to the content you would like to be "mainly" known for.

Unless you have perhaps more than 100,000 subscribers, I don't think it makes much sense to create a second channel. It runs the risk of dividing your fanbase. The second channel's fanbase will come from your main channel's fanbase because they would be the ones interested in seeing behind-the-scenes footage. Alone, the channel doesn't seem to make sense. Imagine some random person finding your second channel and going "what's going on here? Behind the scenes of what exactly?"

My advice is to stick to one channel. If you are concerned of your channel being cluttered, try creating playlists. Then you can feel free to even try other types of content on your channel (unless you've already immortalized it in your channel name). I believe that's what some "Channel/TV" accounts do. They have a playlist per show. This helps when they are uploading different types of content during different days. It just gives viewers a look into the type of content you have all housed in one place. And, it contributes to your main channel's analytics which would in turn create positive changes in your channel.

Hope that helps/makes sense. :)

wait until you have a few thousand subs in my opinion. u can always put the bts as unlisted on your main channel

thats what I've been doing lately, and I add a link within the other videos or leave the unlisted videos in a playlist. I'm not popular enough for a 2nd channel yet
