When is it PROPER to add an edit into your video?

I've Got It
When would it be a good idea or proper time to add an edit within your gaming videos?
There's ways of adding TOO MUCH EDIT and too little! How do you find a good balance?

Well, start out by removing lengthy pauses with no commentary/bad commentary.
Majority of umm's cough's other sound effects, Sometimes an uhm is ok, depends on game and where it fits into commentary.
Lengthy blank spots in the game where there's nothing happening and you're just talking and walking for 5 mins .

Example most of the big guys that I've seen with pro editors record 50-60 mins of gameplay, which then gets cut down to 15-20 minutes of "great" content, so take that into consideration and try to make good content from it.

I usually cut out all the "long pauses" unless its in a horror game where it's for suspense! I always cut out my coughs or sneezes and redo a scene if needed! The only thing I can't remove are my clicks from my mouse, so I try to click as little as possible!

I also love to add in edits or silly things! Like in one of my videos a creeper was chasing me and I was quickly saying "nononononononononono" and had a chainsaw circling around it as a silly thing.
I really want to improve on my visual fx editing but I don't know any great tutorials so I've been practicing everything on my own!

Everyone starts somewhere... overall it just takes practice and hard work/dedication, everyone started out at the bottom and worked their way up, we can't all get a small loan of a million dollars.

Maybe @Tomba can help with VFX editing he has a series of sony vegas tutorials and uploads new ones daily so maybe there'll be something later on that can help

That'd be awesome if it was that easy LOL. I know it's going to be about the adventure to the top! It's all about learning, improving and getting better! I also need critique on my videos so I can improve! Know anywhere I can find that?
I shall check Tomba out and learn some things!
Thanks again @Sin B

You can post there for a review/feedback on channel videos or full package. Think you can post once a week or so, it's in the rules thread anyways the details.

Hey Tuurngait Gaming!

Awesome question and thank you @Sin B for mentioning me!
Well the proper balance is different depending on your type of video.

I checked your channel out to get an idea of what you'd like and I am guessing something to make your gameplay more appealing for the eye and then we have funny videos!

So in funny videos you've got great potential because funny things happen a long the way when you're recording.
I would recommend using Jump cuts to skip the boring parts for funny videos and then add some nice sound fx (I'll release one on my channel thanks for the idea).
And then I would recommend using a border for your webcam. (like the one on my channel but more simple)

There you have the foundation for your videos.
  • Jump cuts to skip right into the fun parts which will make the audience keep watching
  • Webcam border
  • Color Correction could be nice or just switching up the brightness and contrast to make it smoother because the minecraft videos are a bit dull when it comes to color)
Start out with those, they are three very simple rules to make your videos more appealing!

Make a review request on the forum when you're done, we are starting slow right now!
And when you've done that we'll talk more about what you can add in between your jump cuts. (Funny transitions, funny subtitles, sound fx)
You'll notice these things more when you watch a big channel with your type of content!

I hope I could help you in the slightest!

Regards

@Tomba I actually checked out your channel and saw the jumpcuts and I used that in the video I'm rendering right now! It removed 10 minutes of random stuff and I'm actually proud of what I have!

Your webcam idea is actually a pretty good one! I don't really know where to begin when making a webcam border though since my webcam is already setup with my OBS (program I record with) and yay I'm glad to give you an idea! I like your videos and I'm sure to subscribe to learn more! Keep it up!

Woo wee
I made a screen shot that might give you an idea of what to do for a simple webcam overlay!

  1. Go to Media Generators > Solid Color > And drag a nice color to your video track
  2. Press Event Pan/Crop
  3. Hold CTRL and drag the edge of the screen and make it smaller
  4. Drag it to the corner of your video
  5. Add your webcam and make it slightly smaller and center it on the orange rectangle.
BOOM, you sir just earned yourself a webcam border!

Hopefully you understood my guide!
I'm hungover so I'm going to take a shower, in the meantime tell me how it went when you're done!
Don't forget to thank @Sin B :)

Regards
