When do I stop?

Hi All,

Pretty much a rant, throwing my train of thought out here for those who are interested.

Basically, we all know the people who only comment on videos to get people to watch their own stuff, i'm not talking about the people who go "And check out my channel!!", but people who comment in the hope that they'll bring viewers into their channel. Which is fine, it's a community and exploring through other channels and leaving comments is normal, it's just been obviously lately that a few people have come to my channel and left 1-2 comments, i've then proceeded to check out their channel and comment on their stuff. We both subscribed to each other etc etc.

Difference now is, due to our interaction I've stayed watching their videos and commenting, yet they have not continued to do the same. I understand it's not a "like for like", "comment for comment" system (Which is a terrible system and I don't know why people do it), but it just seems hard to work out who's watching your videos because they want too, and who's only there for the chance to obtain more viewers.

Sorry if that was just a big jumble of words, I've just been a tad annoyed lately and wondering if I should just stop commenting on their videos all together because I don't want to play into their cycle of getting viewers.

Any discussion is appreciated, and how other people deal with this, haha.

It's is impossible to know witch ones are and witch ones are not. If I some how find a video that I really liked I will leave a comment without those intentions. See? There is no way of finding witch one is witch. There isent really a answer to your question... Sorry

Yeah I'm aware, it was more a rhetorical question, just something that's been on my mind of late. Not really looking for answers.

But yeah, I normally leave a comment if I have something positive to say, as I know comments mean quite a bit to small youtubers like myself, but if it's negative/not a good video I just won't leave anything.

I anyway only subscribe if I really like the content no matter why somebody came to my channel. So I don't loose anything if they don't enjoy my videos any more.

I try to comment on every video I watch, and I try to watch every video on channels I've subscribed to, but I tend to not comment on videos going backwards (if that makes any sense) even if I watch those to catch up, because I feel like that's overkill, in a sense. Unless there's something really interesting that I want to ask about.

I've stopped subscribing to people who subscribe to me automatically, because a good deal of the time, I'm not going to be interested in their channels' content. I think that should be fine, but I know a lot of people on YouTube have expectations that everyone they subscribe to will subscribe back.

I personally don't mind if it goes both ways and your just creating a active community around eachothers channel but if it's obviously one sided I'll won't like it at all!

I'd have to agree with the general consensus. Commenting on someone else's video in a desperate attempt to get subscribers is a bit low in my book, and I try not to come across that way when I do leave comments.

As for who I subscribe to: I also only subscribe if I just like the content. However, another condition I want met is that they're good people, or at least people I agree with. Admittedly, those conditions make my subscription count very low, but still, I find it's better that than get overwhelmed by stuff you're not even interested in.

Xingcat! Perfect example here. I saw your long-hair video diaries and subscribed for that purpose, didn't expect you to comment/subscribe to my latest videos, which was awesome.

It's funny, I subscribed to you thinking I wouldn't click on your animal/puppet related videos, but the one about the dog trying to fit in was great. Anyways, that's another story haha.

Yeah, this is the reason I leave more then "Awesome video" and things like that. I tend to write at least a paragraph when I'm watching someones video.

I'm like "shi-, if I don't leave a detailed comment they'll think I'm spamming, oh naaaoo".

There is a very simple solution: Comment on the videos you want to comment on, not because you feel the need to comment because someone left a comment on yours. Comments have to flow naturally, you have to have a connection to the video you are watching in order to leave a real comment instead of some forced words.
