When are you giving up?

I've been off and on this board for years. And today in August 2016, the board is pretty much unrecognizable to me. You guy are Saved by the Bell: The New Class, the 9th season of Scrubs, you're fresh fish.

And that's because people don't stick to it. For the most part, I don't blame them. A lot of people on this board will state it from the jump: this is just a hobby. I don't plan to do it for the rest of my life.

Now me, I don't know. I don't consider it a hobby because I feel like this is a stepping stone to my career. Right now I have full time job, but what I want to do full time is much more like what I do after work. And I have no intention of stopping. Youtube is owned by Google, a giant. I don't see it going away anytime soon. So I don't see myself quitting Youtube, but if I did, I'd be doing something in a similar vein somewhere else.

Ask yourself: Do you feel the same way? Many people come here solely to promote themselves to a sea of people looking for the same fame. Many people give up early on. Will you give up? If so, when? And if you plan to give up, is this even something worth pursuing for you?
 
I think the thread question is a bit "dumb" for the lack of a better word. Asking someone " When are you going to give up?" - like do you have a time and date stamped onto your calender for that?....like what? Lol. Now maybe you mean it in a different way while wording it just completely off. If you are here to try to ask people just how dedicated they are to YouTube would be a better way to word it, or even " What are your future plans for YouTube?" would be worded better than "When are you giving up?" it's almost disrespectful in way.

To get to your question, nobody knows when they will give up, nobody knows if they want to pursue it. People can love YouTube and life can drag them away from it somehow. Maybe something that started as a hobby ended up being something they loved? PewDiePie did it cause he liked it, not because he KNEW he could make 12 million a year. He dropped out of school to do it for fun, imagine if he didn't get popular you think he'd have money to live? No not really, he'd probably be forced to stop. There are a bunch of different factors in peoples lives that don't equate to your black and white version of "Do you plan on giving up?"

Life is more complex than that. I however, feel the same way as you in terms of wanting to do this full-time and loving it. Wanting to grow in every aspect and living the dream essentially.

You took the words right out of my mouth my man, nobody knows when they'll give up and yes a lot of people come here to promote their channel (I would be included in this category of people) but this is essentially what this forum is for, it's to promote yourself and to help eachother grow as a community. Saying that it isn't otherwise is just lying to yourself, face it the moment you signed up for this channel and the moment you paid for that VIP pass, you had 1 goal in mind, to get more subscribers so really there's no point in saying things like "Oh all these people came here just to seek fame" as if anyone of us here is really different from that.
But to answer OP's question, I feel as if I am in the same boat as you both because I always wanted to do Youtube as a living, I watched TimothyDeLaGhetto growing up and seeing him grow as a person and seeing that kind of lifestyle is truly the goal that I have in mind when I uploaded my first video. The thing about me though is, I had a vision in my mind, but I never had a means to get to it. It's like wanting to go to an island but never building the bridge to get there, I just thought that I'd get there one day. It dawned on me recently that if I don't start doing what I want to do in life and pursuing my dreams of being a Youtuber, I might never be able to reach it, so that's why I'm on Youtube and that's why I don't see myself giving up on Youtube.
 
I will "give up" if I am not having fun and not enjoying myself anymore! (I do not really like that phrase because I am no quitter) Because this is more of a hobby than a job to me! Connor and I are both full time students so we thought this would be a fun way to spend time together and keep track of our memories over the years! I think it is so awesome that people strive to make YouTube a career! I wish you the best of luck with your channel and I hope it continues to grow and spike the career you want :)
 
The Regular answer to that question is "I'LL NEVER GIVE UP". but the truth is most people either give up when they think it is too much time or trouble (nothing worth doing is ever easy, so i think that giving up because of that is ridiculous) or when the time spent consumes more than the effort is perceived to be worth. I myself find this hobby, as it were, as something that i honestly want to do forever. My channel gets a max of maybe 10 views per video and only 34 subscribers. I enjoy every second of playing and editing my gaming videos. even if what i do has been done a thousand times. I, myself, will NEVER give up. But not for the reasons that most people would think.
The real reason I do what i do, is for the chance to network with and meet people. No, not the people you think. But the Every person. "the regular joe". those people I can help with nothing more than a hello. a smile. People i could have no chance of meeting or knowing in any other fashion. Everyone needs a little help, every once in a while. Even if it's just a "hi 5" and something to make them smile. If you have a specific goal in mind and you want to give up. Then you've already lost the drive to go on, before they even started. You can't start a dream with a goal to give up at.
The reason most people never get to see their dreams is because they simply just let go and give in to the negativity. It's not supposed to be easy – its a constant struggle, with the lowest of lows to bring you to the highs that will make those lows seem so far away that they never mattered in the first place. Again, nothing worth doing is ever going to be easy. And the reward will outweigh the loss in getting there, IF it truly is what you want to do. Remember to persevere and pursue those dreams in the times when its most important, because those are the times you will be tested to most. in your quest to stay strong and survive through adversity. Sometimes you just have to remember moments, relevant or not, that have made you the happiest. moments where you struggled and suffered only to succeed beyond measure. Beyond the means in which you thought you had. stay strong and DON'T give up. if you find even a tingle run down your spine as even some of these words ring true, even though the same doubts and fears overwhelm you, as they do me. Then you will know you are meant to do the things you hold dearest in your heart.

The question remains. When will I give up?

I always look at my channel like a plant and I'm the gardener. And with most plants, you need patience and a lot of other stuff to nurture it. It could take years for it to grow to its full potential and sometimes it won't grow at all. I plant some flowers and fruit trees in real life as well, so yea I just see it as pretty similar because even if its a hobby (a hobby that can turn into a job), I still want something out of it. May it be flowers, fruits or views. Where for me, flowers = eye candy, fruits = food and views = money.

So for me, I do expect some pocket money from youtube and of course I'd love it if I could live off of YouTube one day. Who wouldn't? It's just a matter of sowing the right seed and giving the plant the right conditions for it to grow that big.

So will I quit YouTube? No I won't, at least not willingly. But will I quit a channel? I might, when and if its dead and not salvageable. I mean, would you still keep a plant that's dead and keep watering it?

Anyways, that's how I see it, there's really no clear answer for the future nor how each individual perceive what YouTube is for them.
 
When I upload a video, there's a proud feeling I get knowing that I finally get the opportunity to express myself and for the very small amount of people who watch my videos, it means the world to me to see them enjoy both the content and my personality. That's why I do it. I'm unemployed and in the midst of finding another job I decided to take the small amount of time I have to do something I truly love. Life outside of YouTube is nothing short of a struggle for me, but I don't let it effect my attitude in my videos because I don't want people to watch me out of empathy, rather for the content I provide. For you to say "When are you going to give up?" as if I am sitting here counting the clock until I can't do what makes me happy is insulting to say the least.
 
I think some of you got the wrong idea from the title. It was more of an observation/venting about the history of the board. I don't want anyone to quit. I don't think all of you read the OP though. I'm not actually assuming you will give up. I really just want to spark a conversation about motivation. I think I did, but it's a shame that some of you posted before reading the whole post.
