What's Your Routine Before You Hit Record?

So I am still on the planning/other stages of getting my channel started. I would like to see if other people that post all the time have developed a sort of routine before they hit the record button. Or is it just what ever happens, happens?

The reason I ask is due to the "other" stage I am at now in trying to start making videos. My studio is in the living room which doesn't give any privacy, sound control, etc. At this point I am not sure if it's the perfectionism that is getting in the way or I really don't have the set up / things in place to make decent quality videos.

I am hoping by your comments to see if anyone out there has to do some things in order to get ready to record, i.e. schedule to film when the house is empty, let everyone in the house know what's going on, etc. Or do you keep a space just for filming ready at all times or do you need to do something else to control the environment ?

I turn off the music, and if I have the tv on (as background noise of course), I turn off the sound that as well, and lastly I will pick up the camera and hit record!

Simple as that! I don´t write any script or anything, I just come up with an idea and do these steps!

Depending on the subject I might do some research but not normally a script because I like to keep things spontaneous. Usually I set up somewhere to record when I'm about to do it, but when I watch my videos I see a massive difference when I record with or without people in the house. Normally I'm much more communicative with the camera if I'm on my own, I honestly don't know why because my boyfriend is the only person living there and as soon as I finish a video I show him when starting I don't find the background, scenery setup or material (That costs money) the more important thing but I understand because each individual is different and if you like it perfect then do it as you like because the most important as that you feel confident and happy about it since it will make your communication much better :)

First I put on three extra pairs of pants. Then I take off my shirt and spread peanut butter all over my torso and arms. Then I scream at my cat until it runs away and hides. Only then can I hit record. If I do it any other way then the purple man will come and smash my computer.

I normally just set up some lights, move the Boom microphone if necessary, camera(s), etc...I have a room that I can film in but there is no door. So I normally wait for my house to be empty or I get up early enough when everyone is sleeping. I have to be more careful with audio since I'm not allowed to put up any "sound foam" or "egg cartons." But I get the best results I can before I hit the record button. Then after that it's all editing. Hope that helps?

I think this fits a little better in the video recording discussion forum, so I've moved it there. ^_^

Thanks for the move Katy :)[DOUBLEPOST=1492911696,1492911309][/DOUBLEPOST]

So you have a certain place you record your vids like a pre-ready part of a room ? Or do you live alone and not have to work around other people ?

I am out in the open here and looking for ideas and seeing how others deal with filming.

Thanks for the reply.[DOUBLEPOST=1492912855][/DOUBLEPOST]

Thanks for the reply. Very interesting to hear that you set up before each shoot. And it does seem that no matter what we should be relaxed, we are the ones that keep control of the editing and we know that no one will see it until we are ready anyway.

The perfectionism is just another way my brain amplifies that weird feeling you get when you talk into the camera. It makes up all the rules that would make it 100 times harder to shoot a video... lol You probably heard the voice in your head say some of them - the audio has to be loud and clear, Is there enough lighting in here ? Is there too much background sound... you get the idea.

Thanks again for your reply.[DOUBLEPOST=1492913284][/DOUBLEPOST]

Yes it does. Thanks for the insight. I would have to stay up later than everyone else cause we are terrible at getting up. But thanks for the idea. people don't leave around here unfortunately unless I am with them lol.[DOUBLEPOST=1492913625][/DOUBLEPOST]

OMG thank you for replying. I knew there was much more to it than I was doing.. I would have never thought of peanut butter. That does make more sense. The hot sauce I use just runs right off and does nothing but make puddles and stain the carpet.

Hmmmm I don't have a cat. I guess I can try the neighbors kid until something better comes along...

Thanks soooo much for help...
I think I will be able to actually get a video out now.

:D

Every time I make a new video I discover a new sound that disrupts the audio. Seriously, i never realized how the common household noises that you don't even hear anymore can sound on the video. We don't have a microphone so I need to remember to disconnect all appliances that are anywhere near the recording area. Fridge, fan, fish tank filter, anything. Then there's the dog, airplanes taking off every 15 minutes... Anyway, we just keep going. If everything works well I will definitely invest in better equipment.

To prep for my recording, I will usually tell my girlfriend and her sister who lives with us, that I am going to be recording. I have my set up away from them on separate floors so usually not too big of a deal. They will usually keep the dogs with them as I prepare everything else. I make sure my phone is on silent, and that any other noise producers around me is off.

From there I do a few things. I will start up audacity and start my OBS. I will do my sound check and then the sync point clap. From here I go into my game. Wait a few seconds then start my intro. That pattern helps make the edits easier. If I am thirsty I will typically do a sip of a drink before I officially start recording. If I am doing back to back recording sessions of my let's plays, I may take a sip during a transition scene I know I will be cutting out.
