What's your opinion on Patreon for your channels?

Lightsen

Animation Yey!
It's not something I've considered doing myself, but I have had a couple of viewers ask me if I had one.

Do you use patreon?
Do you reccomend it?

Have you seen other channels that use it successfully? or terribly? (I wanna see!)
Do you think it's a bad idea, or reflects badly on the youtuber?

Just curious on everyone's opinion on Patreon, as it's quite common for the slower channels like my own.
Personally I'm waiting for the tip jar feature to come to the UK instead.(you can hurry up anytime youtube seriosuly.)
The idea of monthly donations really puts me off Patreon, I'd rather have it as a one off tip, but that's just me :P

If you're really planning to do one, wait for more subscribers or attention, so you can get donators more quickly! ^^
It's actually a good idea but probably someone gonna complain about this, because of you can get revenue from your videos and such
Well, it's up to you

I believe Patreon is useful once you get a wide and loyal fanbase (stuff that I don't have for now, so my view has to be taken carefully).
Take a look at Lazy Game Reviews' Patreon to get yourself an idea, hopefully once I get a regular paycheck, I will give him something (I crave an autographed floppy from him!)
If it damages a person's reputation or not, IMO it depends on what he makes. For instance, a Let's Play requires minimal work, so asking for money for that is just unacceptable.
On the contrary, animating is a long process, so I believe they deserve some extra cash. In the end it sums up to a person's point of view

Thanks for the reply, Im not planning on doing one myself, and I can see that sometimes it does backfire, and people get a lot of angry subs.[DOUBLEPOST=1430478614,1430478468][/DOUBLEPOST]

I agree with you 100%, I remember being a bit shocked at the reaction people had with reviewtechusa's patreon video, enough for him to scrap the idea all together. But I definitely see why people were angry. He had product placements and everything as well as adsense ads.

but I've also seen it backfire on animators, like thebedfellows. if you check out the comments on their patreon vid, people are very angry.

If I were you, I'd probably sneak in the idea in the video descriptions, something around the lines of "I'm thinking to open a Patreon page. Should/Shouldn't I?" and then read the comments. If people seem supporting, then go ahead.

I think for your subscriber count yeah its a good point to do it, Your at that stage where you have alot of subscribers but havn't got that huge fan base thats bringing in good amounts of money
As for if its good or bad, why not ask your subscribers, make a very short video and be honest and genuine towards them, tell them what it could mean and how it could benefit the channel

Yeah I use it, but do wait till your channel gets bigger as there is no benefit for you to start it now! :)

Reviving this thread from last year because I've been pondering about the concept recently. Won't even think about going through with it until July at the earliest (if at all), but I just got curious and dug around for more info and looked at more channels who have it.

It's actually interesting because a lot of Patreon accounts I glanced over with high pledges for YT videos do a lot of stuff outside YT, and their YT videos actually have relatively few views for how much money they get per video. Seems like people who may not even necessarily be into the videos are just supporting the person, which is rather cool. (Alternatively there are also channels that get millions of views per video, and earn a dozen thousand or more dollars per video from Patreon.)

Anyway, what you're talking about Lightsen, with the Patreon video lashback, that actually made me think if I was to ever set one up, I would just do it on the down-low and include it in the channel description and perhaps video description, and as a link on the channel banner, but not have the actual video on my account (I'm assuming that's possible? Patreon doesn't force you to have an external link, does it? Or of it does, can the video be set to unlisted and still embedd?).

Before then I think I might try out the YT donation button at some point and see if it even gets me anything, since that might be a mild indicator of whether I even have several people that would be willing to become patrons in the first place.

I know a couple of YouTubers (and a few writers) who use Patreon. The writers are different, as they offer pledges per story, which is kind of nice, like a pre-order kind of thing. The YouTube folks tend to do a monthly deal, which kind of makes sense, as if you're pledging to your favorite NPR channel or a premium thing.

I think it does take a really large fan base, because people aren't going to pony up that much money per month to keep you going each, so you need a lot of individual contributors.
