For sure making your own thumbnail is by far the best way to go. Choosing one from the video isn't really something that is appealing to people when they are deciding to click on your video to watch it.

Making a custom as you can make it more appealing and the audience will be more likely to click on it XD

The worst thing which may happen is viewer clicking on your ultra- fancy thumbnail and after that almost immediately clicking away when he/she see that there is no any good relation between thumbnail and video content.

I agree with this! That's why I opt to use a frame from inside the video usually.

I would say making your own as the ones that are provided by your video/auto suggested are not the best. Also have a custom thumbnail means you can also give it some good effects to making it eye catching for prospective viewers.

100% a custom thumbnail is better. Unless the person is a subscriber the 2 things the viewer will see first is the thumbnail and the title making both very important
