Not really, these days 2GB is considered minimun if I recall correctly. You can also buy RAM for laptops online, 4Gb should be about 40 dollars

No, to get more RAM you need to buy it. Hard drives are not similar so they won't help much (they might slow things down if you have a very slow read/write speed though)
