What makes you want to click on a thumbnail?

What are some of the main things that make you like and click on certain thumbnails? And would you click on a video with a basic and boring thumbnail?

I just like quality in thumbnails. If it looks like some actual design work went into them, it really effects the odds of me clicking on it.

Well sexy pictures help. Also I like when the thumbnail shows what will be happening in the video. Normally adding one of those two with a nice description is how I get lured in. For example, look at these from Children of Poseidon. It's hard for me to not want to see what happens in the video: thumb.jpg

If you look at my thumbnails, I mostly use the second thing I said about showing what's going to happen. I guess my bottom right thumbnail is my attempt at using the sexy thumbnail method lol.

What makes you want to click thumbnails?

It really depends on the target demographic. Having a 'fun' thumbnail with excessively photoshopped faces will almost guarantee clicks from a younger audience, same with having a 'sexy' thumbnail even if it has nothing to do with the video itself. Personally, and this echoes what has already been stated in the thread, high quality thumbnails that are simple, eye catching and clearly look like a lot of work has gone into designing them are what catches my attention.

We are doing a kids channel - so for us it's big faces with emotions - happy, surprised, shocked, etc. Also a few words in big bright letter to say what the video is about. Also common on kids channels is a logo of the toys that are featured in the video. And finally, a bright background - either a bright scene or or a colored background.

I think I'm drawn to facial expressions more than anything. Obviously the quality is a large factor - but I'm a lot more inclined to check out a video if I like the face of the person in it! Haha.

Depends on the type of video. For instance, if I'm looking up language videos, I click on thumbnails that show the person (webcam, edited, doesn't matter) and that the video is moderate length 5min+. That is because those are the types of videos I typically enjoy.

On the other hand, if I am looking up makeup tutorials, I want to see the finished look in the thumbnail. A nice clear photo. Particularly, if the eye makeup looks good, I will probably click it.

I quite like simplistic and clear thumbnails. I know many Younger YouTubers and its audience tend to go with the crazy colours and psychadelic feel for thumbnails and backgrounds. Yes it is colourful but it hurts the eyes and can sometimes seem clustered. The current thumbnail I have in the video below is my ideal thumbnail. Its clear, it says what the video is, my logo is visible within the thumbnail and yeah. Easy to look at and easy to read!
