What is your viewer retention like?

"taking a swipe at everything"
My most watched video of recent times is 12 mins long (one of the longest on the channel) but has only 30% viewer retention.

One of my older videos is 4 mins long but has 60% retention.

Google says they value 10 min long videos over shorter ones in the algorithm which seems true as the view difference is large but shouldn't the retention time affect it as well?

On a side note the video with 30% retention grew my subs more than any other video.
It seems so backwards????

What sort of retention do your most popular videos get?
Is it normal for a popular video to be so low?

My most popular video only has 26% retention rate and is 6 minutes long. It isn't so good, but I just started. As I get used to recording, I feel like the retention rate will get better!

This is the kind of figures I'm getting. It's sorted according to descending watchtime. To be honest, I don't see a clear correlation between the percentage nor view duration to views. Also, the most watched video is 7 minutes long. I have older videos that have better average view duration and percentage with less views. So I don't know what to believe anymore.

For sub growing, that has nothing to do with youtube directly, its more to do if the viewers(people) liked the video or your channel. Good luck.

I feel the same way as you. My video with the most views has a retention of around 30%, but I have another video with far more watch time with less views that is 52% so I am often times confused about this as well!

Honestly view retention is an issue with is hard to overcome, my video retention has gone upwards to 60% but I haven't done many videos lately but I have had channel growth. Honestly the whole thing does my nut in lol!

You're about the same as me.

I don't think you should be worrying about the 10minute algorithim. Theres a lot of youtubers that like to keep their content under 10 minutes and still do just fine. Additionally, when you're just starting and people don't know wether they like you or not, knowing something is 10 minutes long will probably just turn people away entirely, because if they arent hooked in the first minute they're then thinking "10 more minutes of this crap, no thanks", meanwhile something 4-6 minutes long after the first minute theres only 3-5 left, which is more bare-able and would make them more inclined to wait it out. This is how I would think anyway.
