What is your reasoning for/against monetization ?

Hi!MyNameIsJan

Loving YTtalk
Hello folks !

Since i am thinking about monetizing my videos in 2017 i wanted to know your reasoning why you monetized yours/didn´t monetize them.

In 5 weeks i have made 2200 views. If i account for some growth i think calculating with 2000 views per month is reasonably. With 2$ CPM it would take me about 2 years to reach the 100$ payment limit. Even with some videos that go somewhat viral and some more luck its not likely i will reach the 100$ threshold within a year.
While it might be a nice motivation boost and a fun thing to optimise, this amount of money isnt really much to me..

So yeah im pretty split about this whole monetizing thing so it would be great to hear about your motivations.

Well it stems down to a pretty simple thing
"Do you use adblock on YouTube"
If you answer yes - then you already view YT without seeing ads
You care about not seeing the ads
If you answer no - then you don't care if you see ads or not

The same goes for the audience. YouTube is over a decade old now, ads have been around for at least half that time? I'm sure more.
Everyone that doesn't want to see it will adblock it, everyone that doesn't care will simply continue not caring.

Unless you put 50 advertisements in one video like some people do nobody should get a bent butt about it.

I monetize my videos because long term I want YT to be a place where I can earn a living and do something I enjoy; as a gamer I know the mass mass massssss majority of my audience uses adblock one way or another so a video being monetized or not doesn't matter at all for them and anyone that doesn't have adblock well I hope or expect some level of intelligence from them.

Even if you earn $1, it is YOUR work that earned that dollar. The comments from some people like "ugh how greedy you sack of ****" are amazingly ignorant short-term long-term and so on. Though I'd bet they'd cut if one video got 2 billion views overnight and it wasn't monetized and they lost out on a million dollars. *Not reasonable scenario I know, but it still fits greatly for an example.

I'm not against advertising but I'm not against those who block it either. I don't block it myself but for some reason, major news sites and even this forum shows me messages about detecting ad blocking software which is impossible since I see all the ads and have no addons like that or options enabled. Maybe it is a certain anti-virus or something that I use, but I'm going to keep using it, not cater to buggy ad-blocker detection software *shrugs*

I am attempting to monetize my videos as I said, I'm not against it but if I figured out somehow that subs were blocking them, it wouldn't really bother me. I do 99.9% of my shopping online so ads are cool for me. However, repetitive ads showing me the same product I just bought or looked at are naturally blocked in a way. I don't need to see it again... I'm a grown up and can make decisions myself if I want to buy it or not :p

I agree with the first part; if people block it they block it, that's not something to get offended by. I think when you take really strong offense to it is when you're showing just a weee bit of greed. Like I've seen some massively massive tubers complain about it in pretty arrogant ways like the "fans" that watch with adblock on don't deserve the air they breathe. Which if you ask me is just stupid as hell.

The smarter creators that are equally as massive have external means for fans to "support" the channel if they so wish it (merch/patreon/whatever else)

I've found the most annoying ads to be when I'm in bed browsing on my phone trying to watch some stuff and they give me something, like the YouTube rewind ad every other video. Like what the actual f**k. You had your stupid rewind on its own button at the top of the screen, it was trending for like 4 days at #1. You really had to waste other people's potential exposure on that s**t.

In the message forum administration world, which is what I am most used to, this has become an all out war. I remember the forum days when a handful of active members was a Godsend and if you achieved a 'big board' status, it was a big deal. Nowadays, I see the admin forums full of forum owners talking about how they can counter-attack users blocking ads, how they can auto-ban them and make their experience on the forum a bad one. To me, that is a big slap to a member's face and basically you are saying 'I don't want your community, I want your money' and I just couldn't bring myself to that level of immoral responsibility. I enabled ads on my videos but the money would be used to make it all better, in relation to my videos :) For the most part, I pay out of pocket and I am fine with that. I guess I still have a passion for what I like rather than a need to 'get rich quick' from it.

I dont understand why you wouldnt monetise?
Some people are adamant about "shaming" new creators for monetizing or attacking how "greedy" they are for it. Which is obviously silly. It does make people second guess themselves though.
