I think you should think of your description as sort of a blog post that you would write for someone who didn't have the time to watch the video but wants to know what the video is about.
You should have a strong hook at the beginning to draw people's attention, and then several sentences/paragraphs describing what happens, etc.,

Reasonably short and quick to the point is always good to keep in mind. I also throw in an extra prompt to subscribe on there and give links to my social media for my viewers to check out

I always link to my social media. then I like to throw in something random like an extra bonus to people who read it. something along the lines of "I took a nap after editing this". nothing super crazy. and everyone and a while I will have a if you are reading this comment "xxxx"

As people said above make it to the point and informative but one interesting point I learned is within your description make sure to repeat your keywords atleast 3 times so allow your video to be picked up more from YouTube.

The first line in your description is what shows up next to the thumbnail in search results. So, I try to give an extra reason to be interested in my video if the thumbnail and title don't do it. For me, that line is always "I take requests! Please watch until the end and leave your idea in the comments." If a horror version of something related to what they watched or searched for isn't quite enough to interest them, maybe the idea that I take requests will make them think that there are more where this one came from and they also can have a say in what other ones I do. And then maybe they are interested in just what it is I do.
As far as the rest of it, I usually try to fit as many keywords in as I can in a reasonably-structured couple of sentences. The last paragraph is also the same on all my videos and it describes in general what the theme of my channel is. These settings are set as my upload defaults, so they are already there when I start a new upload.
