What is the best video editing software?

I personally use Sony Vegas because that's the first i used. Final Cut Pro, Sony Vegas and Adobe Premiere are all good video editing programs, its pretty much comes down to personal preference and what you know. I think(not sure) all programs have 30 days free trail periode. I suggest you do a bit of work in each to see which you prefer.

I currently use Sony Vegas Pro 12. It's very advanced editing program, but really easy to use once you get the hang of it. I've also used Adobe After Effects, but it's too complicated for me :(

Yeah Sony Vegas is a good shout. I used to use it and loved it. I now use Adobe Premiere but have also tried DaVinci Resolve, Hitfilm and of course Windows Movie Maker. The only thing I would say is stay well clear of Windows Movie Maker! The rest are all good and more a matter of personal taste - I cycled through a load of the trials on different projects and if you have the time its worth it as you learn loads.

As for After Effects, its more of a compositor to layer video clips on top of each other, to create short special effects sequences that you would then import into an editor to mix with the rest of your footage. Apple Motion is another compositor. This can also done as nodes instead of timelines with programs like BlackMagic Fusion and TheFoundry Nuke. In general I would stay well clear of compositors until you feel you really need to because you feel you are limited by what you can do in an editor - today's editors are so powerful there's little point getting bogged down learning a compositor when you could just do the shot in the editor in the first place.

Have fun editing! :-)
