What is the best editing software to use?

I have my screen recorder which can do fade in and fade out and cutting parts of videos. All of the basics. What is the next step up?

Take it from a guy who has been in video editing for 6 years. Adobe products are a pain in the a** to use and have a learning curve. Most free software sucks or has limitations that just make it a headache. Get Cyberlink Powerdirector. Interface is the easiest i've ever used, has so many powerful features it's insane but they are easy to figure out. You don't have to be a genius to figure out everything. Its all layed out perfectly. I use Cyberlink powerdirector 12 Ultra. I also use Handbrake to encode all the videos after to make the files smaller but maintain quality. It will save you a lot of hard drive space!

If you are willing to put the effort into learning the program I would say that Premiere Pro is more full-featured as a non-linear-editor than Sony Vegas. I started off with Cyberlunk Powerdirector but the renders were slow and the program was laggy so I upgraded. Any cheap software such as Corel is going to be lacking in features and less powerful as a program. Good software is expensive so don't settle on a cheap package that you don't really want - just save up for a little longer. You will have to look up basic tutorials to get to know Premiere but it shouldn't take too long to learn. My recommendations would be Premiere Pro, Avid Media Composer and Final Cut Pro - they are the 3 main pieces of professional editing software.
