I've seen some posts that mention adWords but I don't get what it is exactly.... or how it works? Is it like a network?

I've never used Adwords but it is basically advertisement by Google. It is not like a network.
You pay them for your video/website to get a certain number of views/clicks and they will help you advertise and get views. I don't think it's really worth it unless you're serious about growing your channel that you're willing to pay for advertisement. It seems to make more sense for actual businesses to use Adwords and it's a bit pricey.

hmm I see.. but is there a contract to sign or you can just pay once and if you don't like it you just don't do it again....?

There's no contract to use Adwords. You set the amount of money you're willing to spend and they take part of it after each click/view you receive. You can stop it at any time. That's what I got off their website.

I tried to spend like a one-off fiver on adwords to see if it works and it wouldn't let me do it. Had to set up a "campaign" which I guess they take money out every day so I didn't do it. Might just be being retarded though.

I'm sure it'll grow quickly. Don't take my word about adwords there might be an easy way to just pay $10 and get your 1000 clicks or whatever but I couldn't find it for the life of me.Adword is opposite side of AdSense. Adword is Google's advertising programm and it's not only yt releted, you can set advertisements for Google search results, in websites/blog or any where else who uses AdSense.
Though I think you just should have search Google for this genecic and common question, you'll find a lot of high quality articles on it.

It is good but only if you know precisely what is your target audience so you can set up properly the campaign (demographics - age, sex, geography, interests, keywords, etc. etc).
If you use the generic settings with some symbolic changes it will be most probably waste of money - of course it will deliver a bunch of views but that's all it will do.
