I've heard that videos are ranked by Youtube (given a hidden score) within the first 48 hours of being published depending on their views and engagement. Ultimately that score could explain why one video has more long term success than another seemingly 'similar' video.
Another factor has got to be keywords, in the title, description and tags. Some keywords are just more valuable to advertisers than others, and hence they pay more per ad impression/click.
