What External Mic Does Smosh Use?

Is it true that you'll get better audio using a Zoom H4n connected to a Rode NTG-1 or Rode Videomic Pro versus just an external mic (Rode)? This is what it seems like based on this video: youtube.com/watch?v=qoMQeAc6EU4

That would start to get really expensive since the H4n is $270

I never recommend the SM-57 for a vocal mic. Not for lack of sound, but for durability. If you drop the 58, it'll be fine. If you drop the 57, it's toast. The 57 is primarily an instrument mic, or interview style from a fixed position (the US Presidents have used SM-57's for a very long time at their podium).

However, you cannot use that guys video as a base. He's either playing right into or talking right into the mic. If you're using it somewhere in the room and not being right next to it, you will get significant room echo.

I use the Blue Yeti USB Studio Mic. It was $100 on Amazon and has great sound. Now for most YouTubers like Smosh, they also use a Shotgun microphone I believe which attaches to your video camera for better audio reception for a farther range. But it's not impossible to gather good equipment for a couple hundred price range.
