What Do You Use To Record Gameplay?

I'm just curious to hear from all the YouTube gamers here on what you use to record your games? Do you play on the Xbox, Playstation or my favorite, the PC?

And if you do record on the PC what do you use? Software or hardware? I used Fraps for the longest time and it worked well, but it does drop your framerate and can make playing a game harder since you're not getting the best frames. Also, file sizes are HUGE.

These days I use a dedicated game capture card, the AVerMedia Live Gamer Portable and it's great! The ONLY downside so far is that since I use Adobe Premiere to edit and the footage off of the card has a variable framerate, the audio and video tends to go out of sync in longer recordings. So I have to re-render the files and then edit and even then, the audio and video has a few issues. Just trying work around it right now.

So what do you use and how is it working for ya? I'm curious. Thanks!

I use Fraps, it's had it's problems and here and there I'll get greeted with a frozen game when I press record. But other then that, I haven't found anything that can live up to it.. File size isn't a big bother because I have 2 1TB hard-drives and compression usually reduces a 13gb recording to about 700mb with no quality loss.. So yeah, Fraps is working for me xD Haha

That's great to hear! Yeah Fraps is awesome, it's just that these days I tend to play for hours and 3 hours of gameplay with Fraps is over 500 GB. :p And though I just got a new drive, I play a lot and then edit over time. :D

True, true. I know that a few people record really long sessions (One of the reasons I haven't done a Gmod video with Fraps :p ) and end up with file sizes in excess of 500gb. Seriously, if Fraps had inbuilt compression whilst recording and still delivered the same video quality it would be the best PC game recorder out.

I play PC and record with DXTory. It gives great file sizes with Lagarith Lossless Codec, and can be compressed furthermore after the recording, even though DXTory compresses as it records. DXTory has a lot more features than Fraps, but it is for power-computers. I've been through both Fraps and DXTory, and trust me on this - DXTory is better by far for my computer because it's a power computer, but for slower computers Fraps is the better choice.

People keep telling me that DXTory is a better recording software than Fraps, but nobody ever gives me a good reason why. Can you explain to me the more features that DXTory has than Fraps.

Yeah I'd like to hear more about DXTory cause I too have heard that it's superior to Fraps, but I just never have had a chance to try it out. What are the filesizes like for, say 1 hour of footage?
