What do y'all Think of Copyright?

Copyright is good because it protects the creator and allows you to make money off you original ideas. Without copyright, anyone could sing a song, or upload a video and say it is their own when it isn't. Copyright is bad because it gets abused I mean there are still songs from the 1940's that are copyrighted and the people who wrote the song are dead but some big company is still making money off it. On YouTube, a lot of people don't understand copyright and sometimes blame YouTube just because it is easier then educating themselves about the way copyright works.

To learn more about copyright I recommend you watch the documentary "A Remix Manifesto" it is really good and explains both sides of the copyright debate.
maby ill watch this documentary some day :p

Everyone is always giving out about Content ID because is makes a mistake some 0.01% of the time but what they don't realise is without this system, YouTube would have gone bankrupt from the sheer numbers involved in lawsuits against them due to copyright.

Isn't YouTube protected, in the sense that they are not responsible for the content uploaded by their users?

Besides the money aspect, think about a scenario in which someone uses an artist's content, who is also a fan, however the artist does not agree with the content they are creating. Michelle Bachmann (U.S. politician) was using "American Girl" at her campaign events and Tom Petty sent a cease and desist. Not sure how that turned out considering it was more in the area of public performance, however.... She could be the biggest Tom Petty fan in the world, and tell all of her voters to buy his albums, but I doubt he would be OK with her making a YouTube video that includes his music. Tom Petty doesn't agree with her politics and doesn't want to appear to be endorsing her.

Copyright law protects the creator's rights, or at least the copyright owner's rights. PewDiePie can still load your video to his channel...he just has to ask first. It's not like the copyright law is preventing you from getting free advertising.

It's the work of someone and it should be respected what the author, or copyright holder, let's you do with it, specially when you directly or indirectly profit from it. There are many who don't mind what you do, but others do. Use Creative Commons songs to be safe.

Now, for those of you that think copyright laws are not fair, do you mind if I download your videos and submit them to my own channel? Please tell me, and I'll maybe start a new channel today! :D

Oh, I'll add my own intro, so your videos will turn into my "derivative work". That should make it better.

Hate to say it, but your choice of argument indicates you don't know very much about copyright law. The current iteration of copyright law is extremely unfair to the average rights holder. It has been manipulated over the years to favor large conglomerate companies who hold hundreds of thousands of pieces of content, none of which they created themselves. It exists not to protect the content creator, but rather to protect large scale rights holders. I can cite examples if you like, but sufficed to say, copyright law needs a major rework in order to re-enter the realm of fair.

I know that you should respect other's properties, and I think that's enough.

That's why I said "author, or copyright holder". If the original author sold his/her/their rights to a company, or created the content under a contract with that company, what's wrong with that?

copyright law needs a major rework in order to re-enter the realm of fair.

"Fair" is too subjective.

So I just saw on YouTube Hank Green just posted a fantastic video that explains the weird state of copyright as it pertains to YouTube and he does it all under 4 minutes. Check it out:

He also posted a longer video explain copyright claims which I haven't watch, but I'm sure it is a good video because it is Hank Green:
