Lennart Guitar
Check my weekly guitar vlogs!
I am going to buy a new camera and I pretty much limited the options to:
- Sony HDR-CX405
- Canon Legria HF R606
Where I'll use it for
I am going to film the progress I make in my guitar playing and all that's related. I will film myself practicing, playing and stuff like that. I also will record jam sessions and bands playing in pubs. In that scenario lighting will not be optimal. The majority of the time the camera will be mounted on a tripod filming me playing. I'll also use a green screen sometimes, but again the camera will be mounted on a tripod. I will record audio separately so the mic isn't the most important. However, when I go film a band or a jam session I will use the microphone of the camcorder.
For the stuff written above I don't need a high-end camcorder. I assume both will do just fine. I know it will not be top notch but it should do the job.
Cameras
According to the research the Sony is the slightly better camera. It also performs a bit better in low light conditions which comes in handy for recording bands and jam sessions. From what I know the microphones on Sony camcorders are better than average. So I pretty much made my mind up and wanted to go for the Sony. However, I'm leaning towards the Canon now....
Rethinking I came to the conclusion that a time-lapse function could be very useful for me. Let's be honest, it's not that much fun to see someone practicing the guitar. However I want to show that part too because I want my video to show how many I practice and make my progress visible and measurable. Therefor time-lapse could come in handy because I could just quickly show how much I practiced that day, week or month and go on to the next subject.
I tried to find out if the Sony has a time-lapse feature too but I couldn't find any confirmation. I did find 2 time-lapse videos using the Sony but I doubt the camera really has that feature; it isn't stated anywhere! If the Sony has the time-lapse feature my decision is pretty much made.
So what's your pick? If you suggest to go for the Canon Legria HF R606, is it worth to spend a little bit extra and go for the Canon Legria HF R66? Or is that unfair and should I pick a higher end Sony too to put it up against?
Thanks!
