What am I doing wrong?

I have a channel which has a couple thousand subscribers (I just didn't want to use my actual name here). The point is that I've been doing youtube about 4 years now. I have helped promote people who talk about the same stuff I talk about. Same opinions. Things like that. People who started after me who I have promoted have WAY more subscribers and WAY more views (and lower quality videos). We all talk about the same stuff and all have basically the same opinions (just phrased different ways) yet they have a couple more thousands subs than I do (even after promoting them myself) and they also get WAY more views. I have thousands of subs but my views only average like 500 per vid when their average like 100K per vid. One person who I promoted only has 50 more subs than I do (and has been only been doing this about a year) and averages about 50K views per vid. How is this possible? My content is nearly the same as theirs and we are both friends talk about the same stuff. He doesn't do anything different than I do, in fact all he has is a picture up while he talks while I actually film myself and other things. I don't know how these people are doing better than me or how some of them have similar sub counts to mine but are getting way more views. It's not as if we discuss different subjects or even have that different of opinions or content. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Because at this point with how hard I've been working only to see people I've promoted do WAY better than me and get WAY more views it seems that quitting is the better option.

ETA: I DO promote myself if that's what you are wondering, other people promote me as well. I have my own website and blog where I post information and resources have had that for about 2 years. My social media was recently locked down by a bunch of idiots who flagged me so that knocked me down from 3K followers on twitter to 94 followers which really irritates me. I was getting more views before my twitter was deleted by these jerks, who BTW weren't even upset with my youtube videos they were upset with something else entirely. It's not as if I don't promote myself as much as possible either. I do all the same things my friends do and yet they still get more views to their content.

SEO i would guess.
Use A LOT of tags, reddit, stumbleupon and other sharing websites.
I (with 11 subs) get 200 too 250 views every video thx to that.
Also since your channel is older a lot of your subs are probably inactive.

But without seing your analytics/Tags/where you share etc i cant say s**t.
If you really care about that you probably need to pay a SEO expert or go really in depth into the topic.

Hi, welcome to YTtalk.

I've moved your thread to the review / feedback forum. :) Please note that the review forum is the only forum where members can ask for feedback on their videos and channel (including artwork). We like to keep this sort of thread out of the main forums. :)

Good luck.

without a link to your channel it's hard to give critique, but SEO may play a part. there's a lot of tips on that in the forums to help you out in that regard :)
