What affects RPM?

What affects the RPM on YouTube videos? For example, stuff like the view duration. I heard that the longer someone watches a video for, the more the video maker makes if the view was monetized. What else can affect RPM other than that?

To my understanding, it somewhat depends on the bid price for the ad. A highly competitive keyword will cost more, so the percentage cut the partner gets yields higher per impression. (for example 10% of $1.00=$0.10, or 10% of $4=$0.40)

Personally I don't think it's something to worry about, instead focus on other important things like production quality and promotion.

RPM is affected by the click ;)
If people click on the ad, you get more ^^
This is because the advertiser can choose to pay only if people click, for the watching or both :]

Online markets could choose the click one (expensive) <- not for you!! ;D
A travel agency could choose for the view one (cheaper)

If the person watching your video clicks an ad you're get more, and companies will pay more for their ad's to be shown but they normally go for larger youtubers.

No. It doesn't matter how much of a video your viewer watches, as long as he watches the required number of seconds for that ad, you will be paid for that ad view (same thing with ad clicks and impressions on static ads). What you're talking about is helpful with regard to both Youtube's search and suggested video algorithms. If your videos lead your viewers to have an overall longer session length on Youtube, the algorithm will reward them with higher placement in the suggested video sections of other videos. But it directly has no effect on RPM.

As far as RPM, the two factors that determine whether your RPM rises or falls. They are how often your viewers are clicking/viewing your ads (CTR/VTR) and the cost per view and cost per click (CPV/CPC) that the advertisers are paying. You have very little if any control over either of these things so there is no need to be concerned with them. Your RPM will fluctuate depending on time of year as well as other factors that effect the advertising market and CPC/CPV. The only measure of control you have over RPM is the genre of your content. Some niches have very high CPV rates compared to others.

I'm very sleepy...if I screwed any of that up, someone feel free to correct me. I'm like a zombie over here...it's 5AM and I need to get to sleep lol.

Wow, thanks for all the replies everyone. I really appreciate it :D something just doesn't make sense though, because my friend uploaded a "try not to laugh" video that was like an hour long (more minutes watched=higher RPM???) and he was getting $4 per 1000 views, which is crazy. I uploaded one that was 10 minutes long, and i'm getting a little more than $1 per 1000 views. Could it maybe be in the network my friend is in? He is partnered with Machinima, and I'm partnered with Age of Gaming, which is a subnetwork of Zoomin.

Don't know about networks.. But a video should have up to 5 or more ads in it as long as it is :)
Take a test searching for a long science documentary on YouTube, you'll notify a lot of yellow strikes on the playbar, those are ads ^^
If you metatagged your video properly.. You should get 2 or more in-stream video ads... Which are the most paid if watched longer than 5secs or clicked :)
[i got 0,32 in a click once ^^]

How do I "metatag" a video properly? Also, what do you mean by "I got 0,32 in a click once"? Sorry I'm asking so many questions haha

How do I "metatag" a video properly?
setting up an AdWords campaign, You can choose words that will call your video to action..

i.e.
I wanna promote my new powerfull graphic card:
I Create my AdWords Campaign, set up the audience I wanna reach and focalize my in-stream video on these words:
  1. "Graphic Card" (wrote in this combination only)
  2. Computer
AdWords tells me that

  1. "Graphic Card" is an uncommon combination, so my CPC (Cost Per Click) for the priority to other advertisers will be max with only $0.015
  2. Computer is a very used word and my CPC for the priprity will be $0.70. Until other advertisers raise It up
My video has the words "Graphic Card" and "computer" on the RAW_video/title/captions/infobox/tags, thousands views, likes and comments so i can be sure that the ads will appear on my video.
If people click It, I can gain: $0.015 up to $0.70

what do you mean by "I got 0,32 in a click once"?
That day, someone clicked on an ads valuated $0.32: A COOL DAY :D
