Well, if Google doesn't want my money...

Just thought I'd talk a little about my experience trying to put up some Google ads for one of my videos. I signed up for a $10 over the course of 7 days campaign for my first video. Really just to test it out and see what happened. After submitting the ad, Adwords said it was "In Review" so I waited. And waited.

I kept checking back to see if it would go beyond the "In Review" stage. It was about 4 days worth of waiting before I was finally told...that it was Disapproved. There was no explanation as to why it was disapproved (so no real way for me to correct whatever problem was present), but the ad was a no go. They still have one ad type to review (the in-stream ad) so, we'll see what happens with that.

I think there are a couple of reasons the ad might have been denied. First of all, I did not know how to upload the video in HD at the time, so there are black bars to make it the correct aspect ratio. Google might not approve ads in SD because they're...well, kind of ugly :). Secondly, since it's a cover song/parody, they might not like that I used the tune of a song and mentioned a television show and an artist in an advertisement (Google might not want to incur the wrath of either NBC or Taylor Swift).

I will probably try this again with my third video once I post it this week. Since I just signed up for Adwords, I received an e-mail about a free consultation for Adwords setup. I'll take advantage of that and see if the person I consult with can give me specifics as to why the first ad was disapproved.

Hopefully all this promotional stumbling will help me to figure out how I'm supposed to do all of this the right way :).

Google has a bad history of acting first, and explaining, or refusing to explain later. I'm not saying they didn't have reason for disapproving your ad, but it seems like a lot of their policy surrounding YouTube and their Ad campaigns is to just do whatever they want, and make their users run around trying to catch up with what's going on. I've heard of a lot of websites that have randomly had adsense disabled on them with no explanation, and no response to emails, and of course YouTube is famous for its false Copyright Claims that companies file just to make revenue from your video, which gives you a strike on your account that you may or may not be able to dispute. Overall I find their user policy to be incredibly poor.

That being said, hopefully your consultant will be able to help you out! It's not often you get to talk to a real person from Google, so maybe getting your foot in the door will open up answers to questions that you normally wouldn't get. :)

Probably because it's a parody and you're using a song in the background. Check your email and you can submit further information. Videos with any type of music in them is always hard to monetize even if you own the rights.

Cool, thanks everybody.

Does the same go for videos with some Creative Commons background music? I'm working on a new non-song video and I thought I'd add some CC track to give it a little something-something. Though, I'll let it go if I'm not likely to be able to advertise/monetize the video.

You can definitely use CC music in your video. Check out creativecommons.org which provides you with some information about the licensing, and websites that are available to search for music on. Then of course there's tons of musicians on Youtube itself who make free music for other YouTubers to use!

Great! Thanks! I saw that there is a sticky on another thread with a ton of links. I'll check 'em out for my next video.
