Voice Work / Voice Training

Ola people.

As a very new yt'er I've gotten very little feedback.
The 2 constructive criticisms I have gotten so far are serious though.

1. My videos are too long, especially for a new audience. (This I can fix)
2. I sound monotone (monotonous?)

Now 2 is the one I have no clue how to fix.
With my first video I was mumbling and barely audible. I learned fast and adapted.
I now sound crystal clear and am sure to pronounce everything and also I work to actively never say "uhm..." or some such variant.

A dull voice is hard though, as to myself I sound animated. But when I listen back I do not. When I try to add more pitch and stuff I sound disingenuous or rehearsed. The interwebs also doesn't have a wealth of vocal training resources that I was able to track down.

Does anyone here have advice on how to improve. Maybe even some resource where I can learn that awesome "radio voice". My channel is purely for my entertainment but I still like doing things properly regardless of the purpose thereof so any help / experience will be much appreciated.

TLDR: I sound dull, what do?

I used to be a bit monotone, I put it down to being a bit nervous about recording and having my parents hear me. What I did, was.. well, I pretty much stopped caring. BUT, in your case. I'd suggest trying the following activities

- screaming at inanimate objects for no reason
- pretending to host a podcast by yourself
- practice being a fake radio host!

Yes, the last one is a good exercise. Sit there and just repeat stuff like "Hey there, welcome to 93.7FM. Today we're going to be BLASTING some awesome tracks from this week, Enjoyyyy". I did that for a few hours actually, just coming up with new and improved sayings and increasing my energy levels to draw emphasis on different phrases and words.

You see something cool in game? Don't be like "oh wow, that's cool" go absolutely ape s**t over it like "Holy s**t, that's awesome. Can I touch it?". There are no limits on YouTube, and one of the main components of an entertaining commentary is vocal performance. So just practice being a loud and out there radio host! ;D

That right there is how you get all the ladies...
But Faptain is correct over exaggerate how you feel about thing.
Key to Commentating > Fake Reactions. :p Haha

You guys make a very important point.
I've watched a couple of vid's post this thread with a key ear and I've noticed exactly this.

Which is sad because I know they are doing it yet it still intrigues me as a viewer.
I did some voice work while I was in the USA where I had to really play it. Like @Faptain said, I will practice that a lot. Even around friends, just to get super comfortable with it so I can sound genuine at the same time.

That's exactly right. By "Fake" reactions we don't mean jump off your seat screaming that you found something. Going from a "Found it" to a "I FOUND YOU YA LITTLE s**t" can make a big difference on the viewer :P

Well what I do is, I put on a persona....I don't change who I am when I am making videos, simply act out certain reactions and that is what keep me poly tone ;)

Well i was origanlly monotone with my videos but I make a little post it and put it under my facecam amd i leave like helpful hints on the stuff the mistakes i usally see and I sometimes I over exsagerate a little i dont think i spelled that right and it usally helps a bit and I end up in the long run getting hyped up

Well, last night I did some more recordings and applied what you guys have said.
Once I start editing the footage I will compare it to older videos.

I also got in touch with a mate of mine that does professional voice work and got some tips.
If the improvement is substantial I will try formulate what I changed/improved and post some results.
