Views are worth more then Subs

Hey guys,

I see a lot of the upcoming youtubers focusing on trying to get subs...but I think they are missing the point...

The sub count does absolutely nothing but make the general look of your channel bigger, does absolutely nothing for view count in general or on specific videos, I would recommend looking up SEO optimisation. Back to my point a lot of them do sub4sub which is the BIGGEST mistake any youtuber can do. The last thing needed is to have for instance 3k subs and get 30 views...that doesn't work for anyone.

I have come across youtubers with 170 subs and 60k views and tbh id rather be in this guys shoes. First step is to get people watching, that's the number 1 priority.

I'm approaching 700 subs and tbh if you gave me the option between 700 subs and 70k views id take the views all day long!

Word of advice, please do not try make yourself out to be bigger then what you really are on youtube - be humble and respect other youtubers!

True but things are different when you're small. Of course I'd love to get many views through search/suggested but YouTube doesn't place me there. I assume it's because I don't have enough watch time. So the only way I see is to gain (real) subscribers from outside of YouTube who then give me more watch time ?

I'm still small too, but the point is a lot of upcoming youtubers arnt patient so they sub4sub, it works out a lot better for instance if you have 90% audience retention from 50 views then 28% retention from 200 views. But yeh a lot of new youtubers think having a big sub number counts towards the youtube algorithm for search results. which is does not.

I know its frustrating - hell I get frustrated as well. Have you tried collaborations? :)

You're right. I always think sub4subbers (is that a word? :D) do it because they think it'll help the ranking or they just want to appear more popular

YTTalk is the club for frustrated people :D No collabs yet but surely in the future (when I've figured out a way to do it.)

Your points are valid, though I feel more like subs and views go hand in hand :)

Either way you want to entertain (or inform, or whatever your channel specialises in) a person on your video.
Here's how I see it:

Channels that covery multiple subjects:
  • It is unlikely that many of your viewers will be interested in 100% of your content. they may watch for a particular game, genre, type of video etc. but it is less likely they will subscribe.
  • Therefore views are THE most important thing to consider for your channel, traffic will flood in, but also flood back out, you just have to focus on continuing to get new waves of viewers in.
Vloggers and similar life channels:
  • Your channel thrives on subscribers, they are the people that will want to travel with you, and follow your stories. New viewers will quickly leave if they are not hooked.
  • Therefore concentrate on speaking to your audience, relate your experiences and make a connection with people, talk to them in the comments section.
  • Dont forget the one off videos that will prove to be introductions for new viewers, and a gateway to gaining new subs.
Most other channels:
  • A mixture of both subscribers and viewers will be great for you. Make it a healthy balance.
  • @RichGuitarGamer is right, sub4sub will NOT help your channel, fake sub numbers do nothing to help boost your start on youtube.
Why do people view? - they liked the thumbnail, its a topic they are interested in, it's trending, they miss-clicked? lol ;)

Why do people subscribe? - what they DID end up seeing was just so damn good they want to see more from the creator.

Make something worth watching, and the subs will come. There's no need to boost sub numbers, like Rich said, focus on the viewer, but don't neglect the regular viewers.
This is all just my opinions and ideas, so take it as it is :P

No need for frustration, you are making quality videos from the beginning (unlike how I started) you are on the right road to growing hang in there :D

BIG thumbs up on this great and informative post! :thumbsup2: (when all I managed to do was whine :D)

I guess now I'm mostly over the initial frustration phase and am enjoying the journey :) Thank you so much but I have to admit I deleted all my crappy videos from 2 years ago ;) Yes, I'm hanging in there, swinging back and forth... :D
Good luck to you and your channel as well! :)

I agree with most of the stuff above, watch time and views are king, but it's good to have a few subs so when people hover over your channel icon they know there's no smoke without fire (apart from extreme sub4sub people, you probably won't get over a thousand subs without some kind of quality or interesting content)

I agree that views are very important. But like u said 3k subs and get 30 views doesn't look good, on the other hand 100k total views and like 40 subs looks just as bad. If their videos are actually good why aren't they gaining subs? (is what i would ask if i saw a channel like that). As one of the guys above mentioned, they go hand in hand, unless you are doing something wrong that is.
