Opinionated Vlogger and Gamer
Ok so the video I have down in my signature right now (Retro Gaming - IT Invaders) is not getting a lot of traffic (I rarely get a ton, but I was hoping for more than 7 views), and it's gotten a lot of thumbs down (3 out of a total of 4 ratings). It's only 5 minutes long and it's basically showing me trying, and failing, to play this old game. Could I get an opinion about it? I don't think it's too long - do people just not like watching older games and/or watching people fail at games?

hey i just checked out the video and umm not getting the views could be a tag issue, did you pick good tags?
also im a big gamer and love games. retro games at least that one arent really interesting or exciting and i would only watch it if the person playing it made jokes about it or acted silly so really would just watch for the jokes and not gameplay

maybe try with another retro and see how that goes?

Yeah I suck at making jokes, but I thought just seeing me fail would be funny? I also tried to keep it shorter than my usual gameplay videos since I know those older games are less interesting to watch.

I watched the video and what i am about to say is my opinion and you may take it and use it to make your next video better on ignore it, but you have asked for it. I usually don't care for retro games, and there is really no point in time i look up retro games for the game. Also if i stumble on a retro game i will definitely not be stopping for the graphics, so here is the problem with your video, 1) its windowed, try to fix that next time or cut out your desktop so im not distracted by everything on your Mac, 2) Lets Plays work on more complex games but for this game not so much. So how do you improve, no windowed mode next time thats 1, record the gameplay and then do a voiceover commentary, don't do a live commentary (i can hear your keyboard, which is a bit annoying, and your focus is off so you kinda suck at the game) thats 2, and lastly make the commentary somewhat of a comedy or some recent popular topic that way the viewers are not stuck watching you talk about what is happening on a 2D screen. Take it or leave it but thats my opinion on your video.

Well, I really intend on watching it later (I can't watch videos now), my first instinct is that you won't have many searching for a game from so long ago. I hope you have really good tags...[DOUBLEPOST=1373780804,1373778698][/DOUBLEPOST]I watched it now.... well, to 1:23. You're not bad enough or good enough at the game to be interesting on your own. You need to be throwing the jokes out there, and if you don't do jokes, then you need someone who can make fun of you. Whether a friend, a spouse, or a child (the last one would be funniest), having their reaction in the bottom corner and having them laugh at you fail would make this 100x better. The laughing will be social proof, and people think kids are cute ;)

On the other hand, I'm not partial to gaming videos in the first place, so I don't know if people usually enjoy watching others play games for long periods of time. I'd rather play space invaders than watch some average at it play. I might like seeing a kid laugh at how bad their mother or aunt was at an old game, though.[DOUBLEPOST=1373780871][/DOUBLEPOST]I want to make sure you see what I said, in case you're not notified Kleineganz

Well for a childfree by choice woman, having a kid in the video is out of the question, but thanks for the idea. ;)

So I'm not bad enough? Wow, how can I be worse? LOL

That's why included the idea of you using a niece, nephew, or spouse. Really anyone.

As for being worse, you're not that bad. Watching someone play a game averagely is not interesting. Most people would rather play for themselves. You're hoping they'll laugh at you for being bad, but you're not playing a game where that is fun to watch. Someone failing in Halo is funny: a corpse goes around, a narrator says some things, action continues, and the guy respawns only to die again. Someone failing in Space Invaders is them having a dot hit their ship and it saying game over. Without a reaction from you or someone else, I don't see you getting any laughs.

Honestly, the end of your original post asked if people don't like watching old games/ people failing at games. They love the second, but probably not the second when the game is the first. And like I said in my first post in this thread, no one will be searching for TI invaders. Well, 7 people... ;)
