Video Editing Software?

I've Got It
Hi everyone. I'm still pretty much a novice when it comes to editing videos. I can add titles, etc, but I've not done a lot of cutting, pasting, effects, and the like. Actually, I like being pretty edit-free, but there are times I'd like to cut and splice clips better. I also might like to do more sophisticated effects editing, etc. in the future.

So, what video editing software do you guys use and recommend? What do you like about your software, and why? I work in the social service field, so VERY inexpensive is the way I have to go. Thanks in advance.
 
Before I got Adobe Premiere on my new computer, I was using iMovie. If you shoot in a high resolution and then export it properly, then it should look fine, especially since you're only doing basic editing for now. Imovie
Pros: Easy to use, User friendly, comes standard on Macs
Cons: Compresses video quality, has a lot of bugs

Adobe Premiere and Final Cut Pro
Pros: Produces better result, easy to learn if you are not familiar, lots of tutorials available
Cons: Somewhat user friendly, Runs slowly at times, crashes often
 
Movie Maker and IMovie will fulfill the needs your looking for.

If you are getting more edit centric, Sony Vegas is pretty standard on these forums. I personally use the Adobe Suit. But both of those suggestions are rather expensive. Go with the basics included on your computer.
 
$70 Gets you sony movie studio platinum 12 (I'm using it currently as my beginner program) but it lacks a lot of features that sony vegas offers. Platinum 12 is definitely good for what you are wanting, sony vegas costs more but is better so it's up to you and how much editing you would like to achieve.
 
I'm on PC platform and I find that PowerDirector is pretty decent. I have version 12. I think they just released version 13. It's good software for less than $100.
 
I have adobe premiere elements 12. I got it for like $70 and came with discs for PC and Mac and discs photoshop elements 12 for PC and Mac. I have windows but if I ever get a Mac I can put the software on my computer for no extra cost. It is almost like adobe premiere pro but with less features. If I ever udgrade to adobe premiere which is professional software, there will be almost no learning curve. I like premiere elements so far but I'm still learning Photoshop so I'm using picmonkey.com for graphics. If you're using a mac, iMovie would be the way to go, however,
If you have a small budget and want some easy to use but quite in depth editor, I suggest either Corel Video Studio Pro X6 or X7. These are very good editors and will produce whatever you need if you aren't going into more complex editing. It will also build a base knowledge of editing that can be applied to program's such as Premier Pro and Sony Vegas, so I sincerely suggest checking them out.
