Video Cameras for You tube

You definitely don't need a DSLR to shoot crisp shots. DSLR can be used if you want to make very cinematic shots since you can get very precise control over the size of the aperture for depth of field as Kevin mentioned above. If you do go with a DSLR you can always film in full automatic until you learn what f-stop/shutter speed and ISO does for each video under different lighting.

I use a Canon 7D which is overkill for vlogging, I use it since I have one for my photography studio anyhow. My video below is shot with a 7D + 16-35mm f2.8 L lens under very low light, so it's roughly $3k all put together. It definitely weighs enough that you don't want to hand hold the thing to film more than 2 minutes of footage. Also for the price you pay, the DSLR has a horrible mic, so I wouldn't use the onboard mic, which means extra money used to purchase audio equipment.

Hope that helps with the mid-high range DLSR opinion.

Worth noting that unless you're using the STM lens on the DSLR, you can't even really use the crappy mic - unless you're manually focusing.

Though point-and-shoot cameras don't have fantastic audio either. I'm pro-separate-audio regardless.

I've been using a Cannon ELPH 300 HS. So far, it's been spectacular for what I'm doing. Having just started out, it's got enough options to keep me dabbling, but not so many that I feel overwhelmed and have to stop messing with it.

I'd highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a camera to start vlogging. It records up to 1080p, and has a built in mic (the mic can sound awfully airy; I haven't quite figured out how to "fix" that)

If you google the camera, you can take a look at it on Amazon.
