I'm small but I'm pretty convinced when I look at what bigger channels are putting out that there are three key factors. 1. Video Quality. 2. Relevant content. 3. Intelligently tagged.

Basically make good videos on subjects people watch and tag them appropriately so they show up in search. I wouldn't worry to much about gaining subs. Subs will come as people watch your videos.

No friends or relatives knows about the existence of my channel. So that's not really an issue...
