I never noticed this before. It shows a checkmark next to my name when I posted a reply. Actually, I just posted a regular comment on my video too and it showed the checkmark. Is this new or am I just not observant LOL

I'm very happy with this feature because I have had a few imposters showing up. Trolls who try to make quick terror attacks and post vile replies to my viewers. They get banned and I have to delete all of the comments but there have been times when my audience thought it was me making the rude replies.

I've never had a big Youtuber comment on one of my videos :P But yes, I've seen that on other videos. It is a fairly new feature! But hey, you should be flattered that people want to impersonate you haha.
 
Not new, it's been around for a long time now. Maybe yours didn't unlock until recently? Cause you need a large following on Google+ to get verified or you need to have a business website/website linked to YouTube to have the verified tag.

I didn't think about it relating to G+. That would make sense. I don't know why they would use different shapes for the symbol between my G+ being verified and my (above pic) YouTube comments/replies, powered by G+ =)

That is weird, it should be showing up on Google+ as well.

The feature actually came about before the whole Google+ intergration. You used to be able to optoinally (ah the good old days when you had options lol) link your Google+ profile to a YouTube account, doing so would make your account verified, but this caused a lot of problems due to the fact that not many of the bigger YouTubers wanted to use Google+, nor did any content creator for that matter unless they were already familiar with it but this meant people who did know about Google+ were creating impersonation accounts and linking their Google+ accounts to get the verified tick and you can see what that would have lead to as well. So they changed it so that you need a big following to get a verified tick or have a business website/website you own that you can link.

help visually confirm the authenticity of a YouTube channel. When you find the badge on a channel for a popular celebrity or business, you can be sure that the channel actually belongs to them. The verification checkmark only appears to the right of the channel name, and "Verified" appears in a popup if you point your cursor at it.

How do I get a verified name for my channel?
We review a variety of factors in order to determine eligibility for name verification. If your channel qualifies, you will automatically receive a name verification badge on your Google+ page or profile over time. Name verification for Google+ is available to a wide range of businesses and organizations. To ensure your eligibility for verified checkmark, channels should:

  • Be connected with a Google+ page or profile
  • Your Google+ page or profile must be authorized by your commercial entity, organization, brand, or product.
  • If the channel is connected to a Google+ page, the page must contain a link to your organization’s website. This website must be verified (i.e. have a small checkmark next to the website URL), which the +page owner can do themselves by following these instructions.
  • Have a substantial number of subscribers.
