Using kids in videos. Frowned upon?

It's up to you as a parent and I wouldn't care what other people think because they're your kids and you know them better than anyone. If you don't mind providing a dream life for your kids, having them open toys and candy and having a blast, and creating a revenue stream in the process that allows you and your wife to stay home and be together as a family and travel the world and show your kids places most never see even as adults, give them the most incredible education ever, coach their ball teams, and generally be there for them through their childhood, I say go for it. If you're afraid of the internet boogieman and let those fears keep you from living a dream life (sort of like letting terrorists win by making you afraid to go outside), then hunker down and keep them hidden. If you just use common sense, don't use your last name or the name of your town, and make sure it's a healthy thing for your kids as you go down this path, it's a wonderful thing. What kid wouldn't want a dad like Willy Wonka, I would've loved to have played in the chocolate factory as a kid. Or Walt Disney as a dad. We have very strong family values so our kids are not spoiled even though toy companies send us boxes of toys every week, and we spend weeks at a time in Disney World, Disneyland, Legoland, Universal Studios, tropical islands, national parks, etc. We spend as much time traveling as we are a home. This month and half of next month has been/will be on the island of St Lucia and at Disney World, Universal Studios, Legoland, Cape Canaveral, Sea World, etc., it's an amazing blessing. We love Grand Cayman so much we went twice last year, and toured western national parks, and all this is a business write-off because it's what we do to make videos. It's better than being away from my family 8-5 each weekday. We now home-school our boys so we can provide them a 'travel-education'. Why just read about the Statue of Liberty in a text book and see a tiny picture in the corner of the book when you can go take your kids there for a week, see where she sits in the harbor, climb the stairs inside her and look out from her perch? And if you really like it there, just stay another week or two, why not, you don't have any bosses or job to go back to? I think YouTube is an absolutely dream for a family to do together. But prepare for all those silly, "you exploit your children" and "you're spoiling your kids" non-sense comments. They're a dime a dozen comments and you have to know your dreams and what you're doing for the good of your entire family ranks infinitely higher than those pebble-throwers. And you're also providing wonderful, family friendly entertainment that so many parents are seeking for their kids to safely watch on YouTube.
 
I think there is crossed wires here as well. I wouldn't let me child have their own channel until the appropriate age but if they wanted to do it I would monitor what they do. There are soooo many kids out there who have channels below the age. They obviously (I presume) edit and upload their own videos. So many of he dance moms kids have channels im obsessed with the show so that's how I know.
Again ultimately it is your decision they are YOUR children not mine or anyone else's opinion. The only thing I would say is if you have a channel specifically for them then you should be in charge of it.
Check out Hannah maggs, erinandbaby, britneyandbaby and there is a youtuber on here I can't think of the name pink pic with cartoon kids. They all have kids in and they aren't causing any harm.

I'm under the assumption that he's referring to his three old twins, so he would most certainly be shooting, editing, uploading, managing the whole channel. Unless they're wonder-kids are familiar with cameras and lighting and editing software and uploading! :)
 
hahah firstly, yes i would be in control as they're only 3 so wouldn't be able to do anything other than opening stuff hahaha and secondly ... OMG! My boys love your vids @Video Cranker !!! hahaha especially your christmas ones!! have watched your christmas morning vid about 1000 times!! haha as soon as its over they want to watch it again and again! haha And your message you have put makes me feel a million times better for going ahead and doing the videos, and i like to think that i would have a pretty tough shell and ignore the ridiculous comments from some people anyway! :D :D Thank you!

I would urge caution when using kids whether they are yours or not.

I used to do toy car backyard birthday parties, sometimes I would have one or more of my kids help me. The youngest they would have been would be around eight years old. There was a comment or two about 'making my kids work'. My philosophy was that it enabled me to teach my kids how to be responsible, how to treat a customer, and how to earn a living.

In farming country, kids get up early and have their chores in order to keep the family business going. It's a fact of life. Just because we live in the city doesn't mean that they don't have responsibilities.

Most of all, I paid my kids. They got $8 an hour. Even better was that when we got tips, I split the tips evenly with them. Needless to say, many times, the tips were better than their wages.

I almost forgot. When I was on Mythbusters back in 2005, I requested that I would help them with an episode but I wanted my kids to come with me. They said that it wouldn't be a problem and my kids got a lot of screen time. It was an opportunity of a lifetime for them to be so involved in a world-wide popular program. Especially with it being such an iconic show that was educational as well as entertaining.

My kids have helped me with a few YouTube videos. I won't have them do very many because they have their own lives. That may change in the future as they are 18 and 21 now. I keep trying to nudge them into their own channels but they don't have the inspiration.
