Using Adobe Premiere over FCPX or iMovie

I've Got It
I already believe FCPX is better than iMovie, but I just got CS6 and I'm wondering. I only got CS6 for a better version of After Effects and in my last suite (CS3) never paid much attention to Premiere. With all the improvements in CS6, does anyone use Premiere for editing and what's your experience been like? Thanks!

I use premiere for editing :). So far its not bad. I don't really do a lot with it right now, but it seems easy to use and does what I need.

Premiere is pretty much the best you can get if you're not on Avid.

I use FCPX, and it's nice and quick and easy for simple YouTube editing. But I have to acknowledge that Premiere is the superior product.

Premiere seems to be a bit less intuitive and harder to learn, for me anyway (coming from Vegas and FCP)

Ok, thanks! I've been using FCPX but it has scurvy if you know what I mean, so I can't update it and it's starting to crash more often than before. I'm going to learn how to use Premiere and probably make the switch. Thanks again!

Im a premier user, Been editing with premier for almost 2-3 years now. I moved onto it after my 3 yr course in Film studies where I was editing using I-movie. (bleh to that program!)

Since I moved I have been loving it! Short of after effects etc ;) (that's why that program exists! haha) It covers me for everything and anything I could want, its transisitions are smooth and its options for processing after editing are great!

some advice about it would be this:

First off, NEVER use the YT upload option in the share after editing your video, its crap. Save it as a Mpeg or .avi and format it to the framerate you recorded in for the best effect.

Secondly it says (saving content) every 5-10 minutes. ITS LYING. it doesn't ALWAYS save your own work regularly to make sure you avoid this as it has fooled me too many times! :p

Thirdly, Do not worry that when you preview your video the transitions etc sometimes lag the playback of the video (pre final rendering) as this is just it trying to cope with it, to see an example of what the edits that slow it down look like when theyre done there are plenty of examples online for example look at the beginning of my videos, that lags it out and doesn't show you the transition but it comes out perfect after final render ( edits are: Fade in, Fade out, Harsh Glow, Fade in, fade out, Fade in ) this is standard for premier. its only off putting because the rest of your vid will playback perfectly in editing.

Fourthly, Look up advice on what settings when creating a new project to have your project set on for what it is your recording, each framerate of a game or size of window requires something different and processing can sometimes be difficult and warp the original if you haven't started your project in the right settings.

Finally, Set Affiliations in windows taskbar. If you want to do anything at the same time as processing or editing (only advised if you have 5+ cores, and never on a laptop) You need to turn off two of your processers access' to premier. this slows down the processing of your video but it allows enough processer speed from the 2 cores to run games etc although you may find gameplay hindered or slowed. if this is the case its best not to bother. Processing videos requires a lot of the processers powers, and because of this permier is a bit of a processor vampire, it uses upto 90% (my personal top amount I have 6 cores) of your processors abilities if un managed. to look up how to set affilliations in the task manager check out google but be advised to never do this unless you know that you wont break anything otherwise loosing a vid can be heartbreaking after hard editing!!

I hope that helps! :)

Wow, Bern! Those tips are great! Hopefully, AP is not that intimidating and I can ease right in. Yeah, I'm used to skipping when previewing transitions because I get the same thing in FCPX now, so I don't think it'll be that bad. I'm going to like into these Affiliations you speak of, I'm on a Mac and not sure if I can accomplish the same things, but I'll see.

ahhh yes a mac! ive never used mac etc so im agraid I cant be that helpful there! but anytime you need any help with the finites of premier just gimme a shout!

Been editing with it long enough now xD haha :) glad I could impart some helpful advice! and save someone else learning the hard way :p

If you're experiencing lag issues, switching to Premiere might not help. FCPX is fairly lightweight, comparatively speaking. Have you maxed out your RAM?

FCPX is what I use when I'm lazy and don't need to put effort into the video. I use AE over Premiere just because of preference but it's similar. But use FCP7 over FCPX. Much better.
