Username Advice

The The is strictly so for my URL. ONOTech was taken for a custom url, so I put The in front of it. It's not like that on my channel though -- it's only ONOTech.
 
The reasons why people do it is understandable and I do see where you are coming from. With YTtalkTV we went with that because we couldn't get YTtalk on its own and I didn't want YTtalkForum etc appending TV is usually shorter than adding something else on the end to get it. I do see what you mean about adding TV, it doesn't make all that much sense most of the time. All in all if you make it easy to remember then it's fine.
 
A good rule of thumb when choosing your username is to not be overly complicated. If someone asks about your channel and you tell them your channel name, they should be able to find you on YouTube without having to write down the name. So try to avoid being "unique" by using spelling variations or substituting numbers in place of letters. It might seem cool to you, but all it does is hurt any chance you have at networking in person.

That's what I mean. If you type in youtube(dot)com/onotech, you're not going to show up. Calling yourself something other than your URL screws up your branding.

If someone tells me to check out Smosh, I'm quite clear on how to get there. Seeing all of the channels that have dug their own graves with idiotic name choices already makes me not want to watch them.

The Overly Obsessive Girlfriend's channel "Laina" (or so you'd think) is actually called wzr0713 *good grief. Also, don't put "TV" in your channel name. You're not on TV, do you see the irony? Oprah doesn't call her show OprahTV. Think carefully about your name, because if you get popular, it's going to follow you. My name took over 2 months of scratching my head and thinking for hours, probably because after 9 years of YouTube being a thing, 99% of names are taken.

The x's are because people on xbox think they're coolo they also do it on YouTube. I like being a hipster and putting o's (EX: oPancake)

Most people are like that. KSI uses whatever the other thing was, ShiftHappens uses ShiftHappensBro, Austin Evans uses duncan3033, heck, PewDiePie doesn't even have a custom YT url, etc etc.
I think it's fine. One article is really trivial IMO. The only other option is to change my actual live name to TheONOTech which isn't the best option.
 
This is something I wish I could go back and do differently. Back when I started I knew not to put x's and random numbers in my name. I wanted to be cool and use my name and brand my channel after myself. So my channel was mikekhukuritv

Then 4 years later we had a meeting at the YouTube creator institute and one of the creators advised me to delete my channel and start over because my name was not marketable. At the time I had like 7k subscribers and I didn't want to. Although we can rebrand our channels now with the G+ integration I still wish I would've started over when he advised me. my stupid url will forever haunt me and YouTube support won't get back to me on my vanity url request =(. So heed this threads warning when creating your channel name. Don't end up like me lol. If you have to hand out a business card for someone to find your channel you're doing it wrong.
