Upscaling for more bitrate

Dear readers,

i hear a lot of youtubers mention that they "upscale" their 1080P to 1440P or more so youtube will allow the video to process it with a higher bitrate, thus giving a better image quality. I recrod in 1080P 60FPS myself and would like to upscale it to 1440P

How do I do this?
I am not able to find a single guid or tutorial on this.

I'm using Adobe premiere CS6 for people whom might interest it.

Just create a Premier Pro sequence with that resolution and scale the 1080p footage to fit.

I'm sure there are a few extra tricks you could find to improve the image quality further but a simple upscale would do the trick.

Well once you upscale the video to fit a 4k project file there's going to be some blurryness so you could apply some very subtle (and I mean subtle) sharpen effects so that when it's being rendered the bit rate won't muddy certain colours together.

Bare in mind that upscaling will increase your render times by a lot. Adding ANY effect to the entire video, no matter how small, will also increase the rendering times dramatically.

Personally, I render MP4's at about 20mbps with Maximum Render Quality checked and have never had any Youtube compression problems. I don't think I'd try any 4k stuff to squeeze some extra quality as the whole process isn't worth much. Putting in all of the extra effort for a slightly higher Mbps is almost pointless as most viewers never watch videos fullscreen. There's a reason you haven't found much on the subject.

Save yourself the hassle and just stick with 1080p videos with high bitrates :D

But that's the problem. The birate youtube allows for 1080P is almost twice as low as for 1440. 4 times as low for 4k. Quite ........ saddening. But yeah, guess i will stick with 1080P for a while

Honestly, I've thought about it but for the amount of effort and rendering time it takes it'll make very little difference.

Don't take my word for it though, try it and see how you get on with it. If it works for you and you think it makes a difference that's great :P
