Uploading new videos every week...

One of the tips mostly heard on "how do I get my channel to get bigger and get more subs/views?" is the answer "upload a new video every week according a schedule, uploading a video once every few months won't cut it".

What do you think of that? Does this count for every type of channel? I actually don't think so... Looking at myself: the videos that are going well are mostly the ones with (high) technical complexity (automation of Lego trains) and it's just not feasible to upload such a video every week, hell, not even every month, even if I'd quit my job. Engineering takes a lot of time! Ofcourse, I could upload a video every week about simple stuff but I think that would damage the overall "quality" of my channel.

How do you think about this?

Personally I don't believe you need to upload every week to grow. Really when it comes down to it, the quality of your video and overall presentation is what will get you subs.

I make video game reviews on my channel, and I take pride in my work. Granted it's not the best, though it's much better than something I would be able to make within a week. The results of this show in purely the amount of views and interaction I have for each individual video.

If your content takes time to make, your audience will understand that, they'll give you time. Don't worry about it. Just keep doing what you love :)

While I think consistency is important (meaning not leaving huge irregular gaps in your uploading time), if your audience knows that you only upload once every few weeks, or once every few months due to the time-consuming nature of your video genre, and they are still watching/subscribed, then I don't think you have a problem.

Quality is always more important than quantity in my opinion (ironic coming from a daily vlogger) so as long as what you're putting out is your best work, don't worry so much about the uploading every week rule. Like I said, just make sure it's not huge irregular gaps to the point where people forget about your channel!

Best of luck :)

Well when you tell us about your opinion, it may help if you told everyone else how you got your 2k+ subs. Also, when you don't upload "frequently", you give each upload more time to achieve better numbers. So I guess the best way to grow would be to create great content and engage with your audience. Also networking with other YouTubers could help too as their fanbases would be introduced to your work, and that gives you a new group of potential fans.

Well it does really just depend on the channel and the types of videos you make. For example the Vsauce Main channel only makes a video every 3 weeks to a month, but they are always about 15 minutes in length, have alot of research going into them, and often have nice graphics and stuff. Since you have a job I would advise you to put about 20 hours a week into videos, if that produces 1 video a week, 3 videos a week, or 1 video a month then so be it.

I don't know how I got my 2k+ subs! I think it has to do with the fact that I do something "special", not seen every day on youtube. Thanks for all the answers, I think I just continue the way I do it now: go for quality instead of quantity :)

Quality does indeed rule over quantity. :-) I had a weekly schedule on my channel in 2012 and it KILLED me. I'd upload a video and barely have time to start animating the next (and from scratch, I'm a traditional type who rarely reuses resources). Even though I saw a big uptick in views and subs, it got to the point of me being awake 20+ hours a day (And inevitably beginning to rush things too). If my laptop hadn't given out from the strain I put on it I think I would've, ha.

A regular schedule's good but if it is something complex/highly technical I find people will forgive a non-weekly schedule as long as it's still high quality and worth the wait. Subscribers have definitely called me out on the cartoons that took me days vs. what's taken me weeks. Harry Patridge is a grand example of someone who has months in-between his uploads.

Not too long though. I'm still trying to recover from a six month gap from how busy/distracted I got by freelance work between December and present, heh. Hoping to begin my recovery with a HQ upload next month and a broadening of the genres I animate. I might see how going back to my 2011 days of 2-3 uploads per month goes too.
