Understanding someone elses view count...

Hi Guys!

I've found a channel that's similar to what I'm trying to achieve... I wanted to understand their subscriber count and views and perhaps learn how I might be able to grow my audience like they have (they seem to be smashing it!!)

The channel is: The Ingham Family of FIVE

The view count is really weird. They've some videos with 100k views, next to views with 20k views, next to videos with 500 views. Is that a common thing? Can anyone suggest why that might be?

This is a vlogging channel and all the videos are in a vlogging format so it's not as though they suddenly decided to do a video that might be of a different genre. (Which is what I've recently done, switched from a niche subject to vlogging)

Their engagement rate is through the roof too!!

Any insight into this would be awesome. I'm worried I'm missing something on my channel that they are doing that I could be doing to get a better growth rate.

My original channel was created 2007 but I didnt upload until 2013. Man I wish I started earlier.
And I have videos with a few hundred views next to videos with a few million views.

Ahhh I still have absolutely no idea what I am doing. Growth rate has slowed instead of snowballed. I've also shifted focus slightly... so looking at other channels was the only way to get a better understanding of how the vlogging community is working. Thanks so much for sharing!!

That doesnt make sense to me. to have a video with over 100K views, and then a video with 500? I dont even know how that possible. How many subs do they have? I would see what tags they use on their videos and if they are relevant to yours use those tags as well. who knows, maybe one of your videos will pop up in the suggested column next to one of their videos.

70k subs. Up from 50k 4 weeks ago. Which is amazing growth. I heard it starts to snowball if you're doing consistent content from around 10k.

No SEO and according to VidIQ for the 5 videos I looked for no ranking for any of the tags they've labelled there videos as.

Can't be sure exactly but what I do know is that, their videos that gets less than 5k views are mostly "teaser/trailer" types of videos that are less than a minute long. Guess, even their subscribers don't click on those much.

Try doing this to understand someone's channel. Check the titles, thumbnails, what days do they upload, how old is the video or even the season it was made. How many videos have they made? [I see they have 237 videos in 9 months... I wish I was that quick in making my videos... so yea higher chance of getting that 1 gateway video to help the whole channel, especially if they're definitely interesting]

Do they have similar topic/type videos made? Recurring tags? Is there a video that got millions of views and are there other similar videos made after that? Do you think they used adwords at any point? etc (so many questions could be asked)

And if you really wanna go deeper, check their individual video's statistics as well and compare it to many of their others. It's not just a tags rank that makes the channel grow. Their audience retention might be crazy good or the amount of shares they get, etc.

So many things to consider. Who knows exactly how they got there.

Thank you for your advice. I've looked into this further and been able to answer some of your questions;

All videos are around the same length 20 mins or so...
There uploads seem completely sporadic.
Only reoccurring tags seem to be the channel name.

All of my videos have around the same view count lol, I have been working super hard to figure out what I can do next to get those odd view counts. Really its just youtube algorithm helping those videos out that have odd view counts.

Thank you for your advice. I've looked into this further and been able to answer some of your questions;

Their uploads for me seemed to be daily, why are you saying its sporadic?

They have very long videos to get as much watch time they can get(I think everything above 15 minutes is very long). I just checked like 5 videos from them and saw them getting around 5-6 minutes average view duration for anything above 15 minutes. I notice for a while now that youtube is being more lenient on longer videos when it comes to percentage retention. At least that's what I think, which is quite contrary to what most people would say. I could be wrong.

Now I'm not sure about the tags but since their most popular videos are about birthdays... we could say birthday videos are their breadwinners. Then parties, then maybe the word "surprise". You see those words recurring in their titles. (what works for one channel, might not work on a different channel but you can try). There's a lot of things you can see from a channel if you just step back and be analytical. Just remember it's not just the tags that makes up the SEO of the channel.

Anyways there're just so many things that got them there but I forgot to say the last thing that everyone needs in their life. That is, a bit of luck. If you combined it with effort, it would be easier to achieve what we wanted. lol without luck, it will grow slow...very slow (even if you do everything right) and of course it also depends on how interesting their video is to the public.
