Twitter-Does It really help grow a channel?

Sure, it helps get your video out there if you use the right hashtags, and have a decent following (even though that really isn't a necessity). Twitter is more for complaining about that horrible leg cramp you got earlier, and keeping people up to date on what you're doing, as if they actually give a damn.

It's one of the biggest social platforms in the world, so it's only right that we use it. Whether it's beneficial or not.
 
Twitter works if you know how to use it right. It's similar to Tumblr where you hashtag the most important words of the video you are promoting like #This #Channel #Sucks. It makes your video easy to find when they search the keyword.
 
You'd get 99% of your followers from YouTube, so it'd only be effective if sub boxes were broken (and they always are).
